A $15,000 Geely EREV is exacerbating America's EV value dilemma

Geely, the Chinese automotive conglomerate that owns Volvo, has introduced the Boyue EREV SUV in China, priced at 107,900 Yuan, which is approximately $14,900. This cost is significant as it’s not merely a basic urban vehicle but rather an extended-range SUV, further emphasizing the widening value gap between China and the U.S.

This vehicle is not just a minor range solution either. Geely states the Boyue EREV can achieve up to 375 km of CLTC electric range and a combined range of up to 1,525 km, depending on the variant. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter range extender, a 160kW electric motor, and is available with either a 28.3 kWh or a 50.4 kWh LFP battery. The larger battery option also supports 3C fast charging, claiming to recharge from 30% to 80% in about 15 minutes.

What additional features does it provide?

The Boyue EREV does not skimp on amenities for its price, featuring a 14.6-inch central display, an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, Flyme Auto, and compatibility with both Carlink and Huawei HiCar. In line with other advanced Chinese EVs, it offers 50W wireless charging, an optional 16-speaker audio system, an optional head-up display (HUD), and L2-level driver assistance. Moreover, it is a substantial family SUV, measuring 4,680mm in length with a 2,778mm wheelbase.

      The significance of this release

The broader narrative is not just about Geely's new SUV; it speaks volumes about the market dynamics. Recent reports from Reuters noted Geely's crucial role in assisting Volvo as the Swedish brand faces a challenging automotive market, highlighting the growing importance of its Chinese parent company. Despite American consumers' desire to purchase Chinese EVs, they are largely excluded from such value opportunities.

A U.S. Senator denounces Chinese cars, vowing to impose a strict ban on imports

A recent survey indicated that American consumers are in favor of Chinese auto brands entering the market, appreciating their lower prices, superior performance, advanced battery technology, and modern features. With the average new EV price nearing $50,000 in the U.S., this support is understandable. Nevertheless, a new proposed bill could prevent Americans from accessing these options. The Biden administration enacted a broad regulation in January 2025, prohibiting all Chinese automakers from selling passenger vehicles in the U.S., citing national security concerns over data collection. Now, Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has announced plans to introduce legislation next month that aims to extend the existing ban on Chinese automakers further.
