Volvo's parent company has just announced a $15,000 extended-range electric vehicle, highlighting the significant value disparity in the US market.
A $15,000 Geely EREV is making America’s EV value problem look worse
Geely, the Chinese automotive powerhouse that owns Volvo, has recently introduced the Boyue EREV SUV in China, priced at 107,900 Yuan, which is approximately $14,900. This price is noteworthy as it reflects a significant value proposition, especially since it's not merely a basic city vehicle, but rather an extended-range SUV. This further emphasizes the widening value disparity between the US and China.

This vehicle does not represent a minimal-range trade-off either. Geely claims that the Boyue EREV provides up to 375 km of electric range on the CLTC cycle and a total combined range of up to 1,525 km, contingent on the chosen variant. It features a 1.5-liter range extender, a 160kW electric motor, and either a 28.3 kWh or 50.4 kWh LFP battery pack. The larger battery option supports 3C fast charging, reportedly achieving 80% charge from 30% in approximately 15 minutes.
What else does it provide?
The Boyue EREV does not skimp on features for its price, boasting a 14.6-inch central display, an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, Flyme Auto, and compatibility with both Carlink and Huawei HiCar. In line with other advanced Chinese EVs, it also includes 50W wireless charging, an optional 16-speaker audio setup, an optional head-up display, and L2-level driver assistance. It is also a practical family SUV, measuring 4,680mm in length with a 2,778mm wheelbase.

Why this matters
The significance of this development extends beyond just Geely's new SUV. It illustrates the market divide that exists. Reuters highlighted Geely's broader influence on Volvo as the Swedish brand navigates a challenging automotive environment. This underscores the critical role that the Chinese parent company has taken on. Despite American consumers expressing interest in Chinese EVs, they are largely excluded from such attractive pricing options.

Land Rover reintroduces Freelander as EV brand with six models planned
Land Rover is reviving the Freelander name, transforming it into a standalone electric brand, with six models set to launch over the next five years, the first of which will be available in China later this year. This initiative follows its joint venture with Chery and signifies a strategic move into the premium electric market. Rather than relying on existing models, Land Rover is developing an entirely new range tailored for rapid release and contemporary consumer expectations.

US Senator categorizes Chinese cars as cancer, vows to implement strict import ban
Americans are interested in affordable Chinese EVs, but a Republican senator is determined to prevent that from happening. A recent survey indicated that US consumers are in favor of Chinese auto brands entering the market due to their lower prices, superior performance, battery technology, and modern features. With the average new EV in the US costing nearly $50,000, this desire is understandable. However, a new proposed bill could eliminate this possibility. The Biden administration enacted a broad regulation in January 2025, prohibiting all Chinese automakers from selling passenger vehicles in the US, citing national security concerns related to data gathering. Now, Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has announced plans to introduce legislation next month that will extend beyond the current ban on Chinese automakers.
