What Meta’s new patent entails
The patent details a “hardware privacy mute circuit,” which was filed earlier this year and approved last week. While the glasses are not explicitly named in the patent, the accompanying illustrations clearly resemble the Ray-Ban collaboration currently on the market.
The concept involves a physical switch that interrupts power to the camera sensor rather than relying on a software setting. This is significant because a hardware kill switch is immune to hacking, contrasting with Meta's previous attempts. The company describes this as “tamper-resistant privacy controls that cannot be compromised through software exploits,” meaning that it cannot be easily bypassed.
Why Meta needed this solution urgently
Currently, the only indicator of recording is a small LED that lights up, and individuals have found several ways to circumvent it over the past months. Some simply cover the LED with a sticker, while others employ a trick by starting the recording and then covering the light, ensuring that it stays off for bystanders.
Meta has just started addressing this specific loophole by releasing an update that stops recording as soon as the LED is obscured mid-clip. While this is a genuine improvement, it's still software-based, and users may eventually discover a workaround.
A hardware-based kill switch is the only reliable option that could genuinely safeguard the privacy of those nearby. Until this patent concept is incorporated into the actual product, the Meta glasses remain as trustworthy as the individual wearing them, which, recently, has not been very reassuring.
