      A defense software start-up that was relatively unknown in Silicon Valley just a year ago has suddenly become well-funded, shedding light on the Pentagon's direction in the tech industry. Smack Technologies, an Austin-based company developing artificial intelligence tools for military use, announced on Monday that it raised $61 million in a Series B funding round, marking its second fundraising event of 2026, as demand from the US military rapidly grows, outpacing the firm's hiring capabilities.

      This funding round received support from investors such as Costanoa Ventures, First In, Point72 Ventures, Geodesic Capital, among others, amidst a defense-tech surge that has attracted tens of billions of dollars this year. Investors are motivated by the same factors that appealed to Smack's supporters: a government that, after years of criticism for its slow pace, now seeks to deliver software to soldiers at the speed of start-ups. This urgency was evident in Scale AI's recent $500 million Pentagon contract, which was five times its prior agreement.

      Smack’s primary offering, Omega, is a fire-planning software that plays a crucial role in determining targets, the resources to deploy, and the sequence of attacks. It utilizes reinforcement-learning models and real-time computer vision to produce targeting options within minutes and can adapt disrupted battle plans in seconds, reducing tasks that currently take hours of manpower.

      The second product, Alpha, is a forearm-mounted display designed to replace the traditional whiteboards and grease pencils that are still used to manage combat situations; the company anticipates launching between ten and twenty prototypes within six months.

      According to CEO and co-founder Andy Markoff, the urgency for these solutions is being driven by the Pentagon. Defense planners are increasingly concerned about a potential conflict with a peer adversary, where communications could be disrupted and units isolated, necessitating decisions to be made on-site rather than relayed to a central command. “The future of war,” Markoff stated, “will be more decentralized than any conflict we’ve previously encountered.” This realization gained momentum in March when the Defense Department designated Anthropic as a supply-chain risk and removed it from classified projects, prompting branches like the Marine Corps and Navy to seek smaller vendors such as Smack.

      This interest has solidified into contracts, with Smack securing two prototyping agreements in July, one with the Joint Fires Network and the other with the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, together valued at over seven figures. The company has expanded from nineteen employees in April to fifty-one currently, and expects to reach around eighty-five by year-end. This growth reflects a company moving forward in response to customer demand instead of struggling to make its mark.

      However, this situation raises significant concerns. The use of software that recommends targets at machine speed is exactly the type of system that ethicists and some legislators have cautioned against, as a faster targeting cycle leaves less room for meaningful human intervention before a decision is made. Smack Technologies, like many in the industry, asserts that human oversight is maintained; nonetheless, skeptics worry that “being in the loop” will diminish to mere approval of outputs that arrive too quickly for proper examination. The very speed the Pentagon desires complicates the oversight process.

      Moreover, this trend is not occurring in a vacuum. European militaries are also investing heavily in similar initiatives, from Helsing's efforts to bolster NATO defenses against Russia to a continuous emergence of defense-AI firms from stealth mode. The commercial logic on both sides of the Atlantic is aligned: whoever can assist military forces in making quicker decisions stands to earn substantial rewards.

      Smack Technologies' two fundraising rounds in one year reflect not just the story of a single company but a broader era, where government impatience has evolved into a business model for start-ups, while the critical question of accountability for erroneous software is postponed for a quieter, future discussion.
