Audi's Q9 is a V8 petrol model aimed at the American market as its electric vehicle strategy faces delays.

Audi has invested years in its future centered on electric vehicles. Its latest flagship for the American market features a V8 engine, spacious cupholders, and a ChatGPT assistant.

This week, the German automaker revealed the Q9, a full-size, three-row luxury SUV specifically designed for the US market, which starts at approximately $89,000, with the sportier SQ9 priced around $119,000, according to CNBC. Both models are set to launch later this year.

Tailored to American preferences, Audi's product chief, Filip Brabec, stated that the Q9 was developed with US customers in mind, focusing on the engines and ample cupholders. SUVs now account for over 80% of the premium auto market, making this a strategic move for Audi to enter this lucrative segment.

Technology in the Q9 serves as an enhancement, featuring a ChatGPT voice assistant, a hands-free driver-assist system, matrix LED headlights that dim to reduce glare for other drivers, and turn signal projections onto the road. However, under the hood, it remains firmly within the combustion engine realm, built on Volkswagen’s new petrol-oriented platform.

The electric vehicle strategy that did not pay off saw Audi early to the market with its e-tron introduction in 2019, but US sales did not follow suit, with pure EVs representing only 5.4% of American sales in June. Audi invested heavily in a segment that did not grow significantly, which left its petrol models lacking the focus they needed to compete.

Thus, the Q9 marks a return to petrol vehicles, and Audi is relying on its success. The company experienced a 16% decline in U.S. sales last year, followed by a 17% drop in the first half of 2026, including a staggering 30% fall in the first quarter. This trend mirrors the broader EV demand decline and production cutbacks impacting competitors, with Audi feeling the effects more acutely.

A significant challenge stems from where Audi manufactures its vehicles—as none are produced in America. The company imports its entire lineup for the US, making it more vulnerable to tariffs compared to BMW or Mercedes, both of which have manufacturing plants in the US. While Mercedes saw a sales decline of about 3.5% this year, BMW's sales increased by nearly 5%.

Audi executives are reportedly considering US production to reduce tariff impacts, although they currently have no operations there. As RBC’s Tom Narayan noted, while a strong product is beneficial, tariffs will continue to significantly affect their performance regardless of additional cupholders.

The situation is equally tough in Germany. Approximately 6,000 Audi employees protested at the Neckarsulm plant recently, according to Reuters. Parent company Volkswagen has indicated that the facility could close after 2030, as VW undergoes a restructuring that might double job cuts to 100,000, with brands like Porsche also laying off thousands.

The Q9 represents Audi’s bold attempt to reclaim the American market with a high-end petrol SUV, as the company's electric vehicle aspirations wane and domestic operations face uncertainty. Positive reviews may result, but the challenges of manufacturing in Europe while selling in a tariff-encumbered US remain significant.
