BMW might finally be creating the electric convertible that enthusiasts have long desired.

Good things come to those who wait, and in this case, that means waiting until 2028.

There have been rumors of a two-door BMW i4 for several years, and a recent report from BMWBlog suggests that at least one version is actually in development. Sources familiar with BMW indicate that the automaker is preparing an i4 Convertible, which is internally referred to by the codename NA3.

Why is BMW postponing the launch until 2028?

Before this convertible EV arrives, the i4 name will be temporarily retired. The BMW i4 Gran Coupe is set to leave the market next year, with no replacement on the horizon, and the Convertible won’t make its debut until 2028. So, if you’re a fan of the i4, prepare for a brief farewell before the reunion.

When it finally debuts, the i4 Convertible will be part of BMW's expanding Neue Klasse 3 Series electric lineup, joining the i3 Sedan and the forthcoming i3 Touring. Similar to the existing gas-powered 4 Series Convertible, anticipate four seats and a fabric soft top rather than a retractable hardtop.

Automakers generally prefer soft tops since they are lighter, take up less trunk space when stowed, and are less expensive to manufacture. It essentially meets all the criteria that automakers prioritize nowadays.

Will BMW continue to sell the gas-powered 4 Series Convertible?

According to BMWBlog, the current G23 4 Series Convertible and the G83 M4 Convertible are projected to remain available until mid-2029, so BMW is not in a hurry to phase out the combustion models.

There is also a strong possibility that BMW will develop an i4 Coupe alongside the convertible, as utilizing the same platform, motors, and batteries would help reduce costs. Expect the same Gen6 motors and batteries that support the i3 lineup to be utilized here as well.

Being a purpose-built EV should also allow BMW to extend the wheelbase and create more cabin space, which is always needed in a four-seat convertible. While 2028 may seem far off in some respects, it’s relatively close in terms of automotive development, so anticipate BMW to release more details in the upcoming months.

Two Indian automakers have just outperformed Tesla in a surprising area.

Tata Motors and Mahindra have recently taken the top spots in a global EV efficiency ranking, placing ahead of Tesla and BYD.

I initially assumed Tesla would lead the efficiency rankings until I saw the actual statistics. Surprisingly, two Indian automakers have managed to outshine Tesla and the world’s largest EV manufacturer in their own arena. The first time I read the findings, I was taken aback, as I have been observing the Indian automotive sector for a couple of years.

BYD has launched the Racco, Japan’s inaugural electric kei car that offers a range exceeding 300 km.

The Racco is also priced lower than Nissan's Sakura before taxes and incentives, while offering features that are not often found in the kei car category.

BYD has made its entrance into Japan's kei car market with the Racco, an electric vehicle designed specifically for the compact car segment in the country. Its top trim provides a range of 320 km, marking it as the first compact electric vehicle in the market to achieve over 300 km, according to ITHome. Kei cars are a category of Japanese vehicles characterized by strict size and power limitations, historically dominated by local manufacturers such as Honda, Nissan, Suzuki, and Daihatsu. The Racco marks BYD's initial foray into this segment.

Waymo’s driverless vehicles have been accumulating parking fines in Austin, and it’s not just humans who are voicing complaints.

Waymo's fleet has racked up $9,325 in fines in Austin due to repeated parking errors, which have become a widespread operational issue.

The 83 parking citations issued to Waymo vehicles in Austin do not constitute a financial disaster; however, they highlight the consequences of repetitive driving errors across an autonomous fleet. City records obtained by The Wall Street Journal reveal that Waymo vehicles have accrued $9,325 in fines since they began operating in 2024. The company has paid most of the fines, but what stands out is the frequency of similar mistakes made by its vehicles.
