Nvidia has provided a DGX GB300 as a donation to the leading science school of the US military.
This week, Jensen Huang made a trip to Monterey to present the US Navy with a machine that most defense contractors would have been required to sell. The founder of Nvidia assisted in commissioning a DGX GB300 AI supercomputer at the Naval Postgraduate School, marking the first installation of its kind within the American military, and the company opted to donate it instead of going through a procurement contract.
The system is a single liquid-cooled rack featuring 72 Blackwell Ultra GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs, interconnected as one memory domain and operating with Nvidia's Mission Control orchestration software. It represents the rack-scale configuration Nvidia offers for inference and reasoning tasks, and by DGX standards, it is the highest tier. NPS now boasts what is currently the most powerful supercomputer in the Pentagon.
An estimation placed the system's value at about $15 million, though neither Nvidia nor the school publicly affirmed any specific figure. The donation was made to the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation rather than via a defense procurement contract, thereby avoiding the typical competitive bidding process. DDN, VAST Data, and Vertiv provided the storage, data infrastructure, and cooling systems accompanying the rack.
NPS serves as the Navy’s graduate research university, and the machine is designed for educational and research purposes rather than active operations. Faculty and students intend to utilize it for weather forecasting, ocean modeling, cybersecurity, and disaster response planning, as well as to create maritime digital twins using Nvidia’s Omniverse platform. The institution also aims to develop its own foundational models, including an internal system reportedly referred to as NPS GPT for managing sensitive data.
The installation coincides with the establishment of a dedicated AI research center at the campus the prior year, providing a ready pathway for the new compute power. One of the attractions relates to the precision of the predictions. Owen articulated the ability to forecast conditions for highly localized operations, as opposed to the broader grids—around 50 km across—that most models typically utilize.
For a Navy that prepares for amphibious landings and small boat operations impacted by unmanageable weather, improved forecasting is crucial. "The question is not whether these technologies will exist," said Captain Michael Owen, the vice provost for warfare studies at the school. "The question is whether future military leaders understand them well enough to assess their limitations, apply them ethically, and utilize them responsibly."
This perspective is important because the NPS system is focused on research and innovation, unlike the existing supercomputing centers of the Department of Defense that handle operational workloads. The intent is to allow the school to refine models that the broader joint force might eventually rely upon rather than integrate the rack into everyday command operations.
Huang, who attended the commissioning alongside Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of US Pacific Command, noted AI as a forthcoming "backbone of America’s defense." This observation is not entirely impartial from the individual whose company significantly contributes to that backbone.
The event concludes an arrangement that began discreetly in December 2024 with a cooperative research and development agreement between NPS and Nvidia. Interest from the Pentagon in Nvidia technology has notably increased over the past year, with the company having spent considerable time selling similar systems to national governments.
The donation places the hardware within a military institution for the first time, representing a distinctive foothold. A school populated by serving officers effectively serves as a training facility for the future customers who will dictate requirements. Paparo informed attendees that officers will increasingly lead in environments where response times are minimized, and advantage shifts to those who can act quicker than their adversaries.
Vice Admiral Ann Rondeau, the school’s president, articulated the value proposition more straightforwardly: "Education remains our greatest strategic advantage," she stated. Whether a rack of GPUs qualifies as education or infrastructure is presently a question the Navy seems comfortable leaving unanswered.
