Trump declares approximately $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency earnings as digital assets surpass real estate.

In 2025, Donald Trump reportedly generated approximately $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency activities, as indicated in the annual financial disclosure submitted by his administration to the US Office of Government Ethics on June 30. This made digital assets the largest source of income during his first complete year back in office. The 927-page document, made public on July 2 following a 30-day extension, showed his total income for the year was around $2.2 billion, according to the International Business Times.

Cryptocurrency earnings surpassed both his real estate and branding revenues combined, marking a significant shift from the financial patterns that had characterized Trump's business dealings for many years. A substantial portion of this income came from two main ventures: the $TRUMP memecoin, which accounted for approximately $635 million in licensing and royalty income, and World Liberty Financial, the crypto company established by his sons, which generated over $500 million from token sales and more than $200 million linked to equity stakes, as reported by Quartz.

The remainder of his earnings stemmed from various other digital asset projects, whose licensing and equity revenues barely appeared in his disclosures just a few years prior. This represented a considerable increase from the previous year when his first statement after returning to office indicated just over $600 million in income, with only a few tens of millions coming from World Liberty Financial.

While the memecoin has proven to be the more profitable of those two assets, it primarily benefited a small group of insiders, while ordinary buyers faced substantial losses. Aside from his cryptocurrency activities, the filing also detailed his more traditional portfolio, which included around $122 million from the Doral golf resort in Florida, $77 million from Mar-a-Lago, $4.7 million from branded watches, and $86.5 million from legal settlements, as noted throughout the lengthy disclosure.

His interests in cryptocurrency have expanded beyond these two main projects to include American Bitcoin, a mining venture supported by his sons, and Trump Media, whose quarterly performance has recently been influenced by the value of its bitcoin holdings. This disclosure comes at a time when Trump's administration is currently revising the regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry that is now benefiting him, a coincidence that ethics experts consider problematic. The agencies responsible for creating this policy ultimately answer to the president, whose family businesses could profit from it.

The reported figures have drawn criticism from congressional Democrats. Senator Adam Schiff accused the president of "blatantly profiteering off the presidency," while Senator Elizabeth Warren called for updated disclosures covering the first half of 2026 as the Senate deliberates new cryptocurrency legislation. Kathleen Clark, a legal ethics professor at Washington University in St. Louis, characterized the situation to the International Business Times as “bribery… graft… exploitation of public power for private financial gain.” Former federal prosecutor Noah Bookbinder was more direct in his assessment, stating, “This is corruption.” Jordan Libowitz from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington cautioned about the “massive opportunity for corruption when foreign governments and foreign nationals can pour tens of millions into the president’s pocket.”

The disclosure has also become linked with the CLARITY Act, a proposed bill addressing the cryptocurrency market currently under consideration in the Senate. Democrats are advocating for the legislation to include an ethics clause that would prohibit the president, his family, and their associates from profiting from cryptocurrency businesses, as part of a broader argument for stricter consumer protections in the sector. This is the same Congress that passed the GENIUS Act stablecoin legislation the previous year.

The White House has asserted that Trump does not actively manage his businesses, which are held in a trust overseen by his children. Negotiators informed Fortune that the ethics provision is expected to be finalized late in the discussions regarding the CLARITY Act, and preliminary indications suggest that the disclosure has not altered the trajectory of the negotiations. For now, the reported figures stand independently, officially recorded and encompassing 927 pages. In just one year, the president of the United States earned more from crypto tokens than from the skyscrapers and golf courses associated with his name.
