Nashville Zoo states that a suggested AI data center might prevent its endangered leopards from reproducing.

TL;DR: The Nashville Zoo is opposing a proposed DC BLOX data centre located just 50 yards from its animal enclosures, citing potential noise dangers to endangered clouded leopards. The zoo has initiated a campaign against the 69,000-square-foot facility, accumulating nearly 300,000 petition signatures within a week. Nashville’s Metro Council is now contemplating a moratorium on data centres, while the mayor's legal team evaluates the proposal.

The zoo's principal concern is noise pollution. Southeast Asian clouded leopards, which the zoo breeds for conservation efforts, are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and endangered as per the US Endangered Species Act. This species is notoriously hard to breed in captivity and, as described on the zoo’s website, is "sensitive to auditory and visual disturbances." Zookeepers are worried that the persistent noise from cooling systems and generators could hinder the animals' ability to reproduce.

“We are strongly against having a data centre near the animals,” stated Nashville Zoo president and CEO Rick Schwartz to NBC News. The zoo houses over 3,000 animals at its Grassmere location, and the proposed facility at 648 Grassmere Park would be directly next to the zoo.

The pushback has gained nationwide attention. Country music star Brad Paisley spoke out against the project this past weekend, calling it an “absolute nightmare scenario” and encouraging fans to sign the petition. Courtney Johnston, the Metro Council member representing the zoo's district, has filed a zoning appeal and plans to advocate for a vote on the moratorium at an upcoming council meeting. Nashville mayor Freddie O’Connell shared that "we have many concerns about the project and our legal team is investigating.”

The metropolitan government was taken by surprise, lacking specific zoning regulations or building codes for data centres, a gap that DC BLOX appears to have exploited. The company submitted a grading permit application for a single-storey structure on a 23.5-acre parcel owned by MarketStreet Enterprises, which has not yet been sold. A different Metro Council bill restricting data centres over 500,000 square feet from being built within half a mile of homes, schools, churches, and zoos has already passed its initial reading.

DC BLOX has pledged to maintain noise levels to acceptable standards and comply with all environmental regulations. They also promised to implement “closed-loop or waterless cooling designs to reduce ongoing water usage” and clarified that the proposed facility is not an AI factory. Nevertheless, this has not diminished the opposition.

Nashville’s situation reflects a growing trend of community resistance to data centre developments across the United States. In Utah, residents objected to a 40,000-acre hyperscale campus backed by Kevin O’Leary until new development standards were instituted by the governor. In New Brunswick, New Jersey, residents successfully halted a data centre project. The political landscape is evolving ahead of the midterm elections, with opposition to data centres gaining bipartisan backing in areas that traditionally have not mobilized around infrastructure issues.

The environmental impact of data centres goes beyond just noise. A report from the United Nations University released this month indicated that AI data centres could consume enough water to meet the basic needs of 1.3 billion people by 2030, reaching up to 9.3 trillion litres annually. To meet the demand, US utilities plan to invest $1.4 trillion in electricity infrastructure by 2030, more than double the previous decade's spending. Residential electricity costs have already surged by about 40% since 2021, with an additional increase of 5.1% expected this year.

This issue is not limited to the US; Denmark halted new grid connection agreements in March due to an overwhelming demand of 60 gigawatts—almost nine times the peak demand. Ireland also established a moratorium on new data centre connections in Dublin in 2021 that lasted over two years. The Nashville Zoo situation introduces a tangible and visible concern for animals that the community already values, offering an emotional basis for opposition that mere facts about electricity costs and grid capacity do not provide.
