Apple unveils iOS 27, featuring quick app launches, enhanced Siri AI, and improvements in Liquid Glass for your iPhone.
Apple unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, emphasizing that this version is faster, more refined, and packed with new Apple Intelligence features, including an upgraded Siri AI. While it may not be the most visually striking update, it tackles several of the more frustrating aspects of using iOS.
The notable performance improvements, in my opinion, are quite impressive. According to Apple, iOS 27 boasts 30% quicker app launches, 80% faster AirDrop transfers (which I’m personally enthusiastic about), and better responsiveness for older iPhones. This ‘Snow Leopard’ style update not only fine-tunes the system but also offers more than just simple enhancements.
What are the key new features in iOS 27?
The Liquid Glass design from iOS 26 now includes a transparency slider, allowing users to adjust the glass effect to their preference. Icons have been refreshed, appearing sharper with added refraction layers. Additionally, Apple is eliminating gaps in toolbars and sidebars for a more cohesive appearance.
Apple has completely rebuilt the Search feature, replacing the outdated Spotlight index with a new system that indexes content on the device upon updates for quicker and more relevant results. iCloud Shared Albums now enables Android and Windows users to share photos, a feature that has been long awaited for those in mixed-device environments.
Popular Apple apps also receive new functions. For example, Apple Maps features an upgraded Flyover with improved aerial imagery, while the Health app introduces more advanced cycle tracking along with support for perimenopause and menopause.
Apple Mail now includes a new ranking system to help locate desired content.
What’s new with Apple Intelligence and Siri?
Image Playground can now produce images in almost any style, including realistic variations, and is more compatible with various platforms and aspect ratios than before.
Siri now operates on Apple’s Foundation Models integrated with Google’s Gemini technology, significantly enhancing its capabilities and conversational nature. It supports longer, more natural interactions (with personal awareness), allowing for follow-up questions that might require accessing data on the display via Visual Intelligence or other applications.
It can also compose, edit, and proofread virtually any text entry. The new “Siri AI” features an intuitive interface with a wave-like animation emerging from the Dynamic Island. The assistant also has its own standalone app, similar to existing AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude.
When can you download iOS 27 and which iPhones are compatible?
Passwords, Safari, and Messages receive deeper Apple Intelligence integration, while the Shortcuts app sees a major update, allowing users to create new shortcuts simply by describing them. For the first time, AirPods also gain Custom EQ.
Apple launched the developer beta of iOS 27 on June 8, 2026, right after the WWDC 2026 keynote. No paid developer account is needed. The public beta will be available in July, and the stable release of iOS 27 is expected to coincide with the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.
For those curious about compatibility, iOS 27 will support all iPhones that currently run iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (second generation) and later models. No devices have been excluded this year. However, Apple Intelligence continues to be limited to iPhone 15 Pro and newer models equipped with an A17 Pro or later chip and at least 8GB of RAM.
