A startup named Friending has introduced a social platform centered on an idea that might seem almost nostalgic in 2026: assisting individuals in forming friendships through in-person meetings. The app, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, links users based on shared interests and geographical closeness while intentionally limiting chat features to encourage face-to-face interactions instead of extended online discussions. Each user undergoes verification via a third-party identity service, and the platform can detect when two users' phones are physically near each other, a function aimed at confirming that meetings take place.

The timing is intentional. In 2023, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released an 82-page report classifying loneliness and social isolation as a public health epidemic, noting that a lack of social connections poses health risks comparable to smoking up to 15 cigarettes daily. Social isolation heightens the likelihood of premature death by 29%, heart disease by 29%, and stroke by 32%. Among older adults, persistent loneliness increases the risk of dementia by about 50%. Even prior to the pandemic, half of American adults reported feelings of loneliness.

Friending is not the first app to tackle this issue. Bumble BFF debuted in 2016 and observed a 16% rise in time spent on its main platform after incorporating the feature. Peanut, aimed at mothers, has secured $17 million in funding, while Yubo, targeting young adults, has raised $65.7 million. The friendship app sector has attracted over $84 million in venture capital overall. However, none of these platforms have reached the scale or cultural impact of dating apps, indicating that either the market is more challenging to penetrate or that the designs have yet to discover the ideal formula.

What sets Friending apart is its focus on brevity in online communication. While most social platforms aim to maximize engagement time and assess success by how long users remain active, Friending views prolonged chats as a sign of failure. The app is crafted so that the pivotal action is not the dialogue itself but the subsequent meeting. The proximity verification feature, which indicates when two users’ phones are in close proximity, acts as both a safety measure and a behavioral prompt: it verifies that the meeting occurred and reinforces the app's fundamental proposition.

The identity verification aspect is noteworthy in a landscape where catfishing and fake profiles have diminished trust across social networks. Although Friending employs a third-party verification system, it has not disclosed which provider it uses or the level of identity assurance required.

Gabor Kadas, the founder, has described the app as a response to a personal paradox: moving between countries and accumulating thousands of online contacts while feeling increasingly isolated. The company is currently seeking venture capital to support development and growth, though it has not revealed the size of the funding round or any confirmed investors.

The more challenging question lies in the need to not only get people to download the app but also to encourage them to use it more than once. Dating apps enjoy a compelling, specific motivation: the urgency of seeking romantic relationships is strong enough to overcome the hesitation of meeting new people. In contrast, friendships are different; the need is genuine but less urgent, and the social stigma of admitting the need for an app to forge friendships is generally higher than that of admitting a need for a dating app.

There is also skepticism about whether restricting online interaction is genuinely beneficial. Research from the New York Academy of Sciences indicates that the connection between social media and loneliness is influenced by the type of platform and nature of engagement. Active participation, like responding to posts and messaging, correlates with reduced loneliness, while passive use—such as scrolling without interaction—does not. By limiting chat functionalities, Friending may inadvertently remove one of the avenues through which users cultivate the comfort and trust essential for meeting strangers in real life.

This does not imply that the concept lacks value. The Surgeon General’s advisory was not just a fleeting remark; rather, it represented a formal acknowledgment that the social fabric of the country is deteriorating in ways that result in tangible harm. If Friending can transform even a small segment of the lonely half of America into regular users, it will have discovered something that larger platforms have not. The lingering question is whether an app that encourages users to set aside their phones is addressing the issue or simultaneously battling human nature.
