The HP OmniBook 3 competes directly with the MacBook Neo on hardware.
Despite a $100 price increase in late June, Apple's MacBook Neo continues to be one of the top recommendations for students, casual users, and those on a budget. However, HP’s new OmniBook 3 is making a compelling case as a viable Windows alternative.
According to NotebookCheck, the HP OmniBook 3 is priced at $599.99, which is $100 less than the MacBook Neo, while providing an OLED display, a larger battery, and a Snapdragon X processor. It is even being offered at a lower price at Best Buy, enhancing its appeal at the moment.
HP makes several distinct display sacrifices.
The OmniBook 3 (14-hz0488nr) features a 14-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. In contrast, the MacBook Neo utilizes a smaller 13-inch IPS panel, but it boasts a higher resolution of 2408 x 1506.
Furthermore, Apple has a significant advantage in brightness, with the Neo rated at 500 nits compared to the OmniBook’s 300 nits. However, HP benefits from deeper blacks and higher contrast levels that come with an OLED screen, making it more suitable for watching movies or handling darker content.
In terms of performance, the focus is different. The HP device contains Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X X1-26-100, an eight-core processor equipped with a 45-TOPS NPU. It reportedly outperforms the A18 Pro in multi-core tasks, while Apple's chip still leads in single-core and graphics performance.
HP also offers more options for ports and battery life.
On paper, the battery capacity heavily favors the OmniBook 3. HP includes a 60Wh battery, claiming up to 41 hours and 45 minutes of usage. The MacBook Neo, on the other hand, has a smaller 36.5Wh battery and is rated for up to 16 hours of video streaming or 11 hours of web browsing. However, since the manufacturers use different testing methods, these numbers are not completely comparable.
HP also provides significantly more connectivity options. The OmniBook 3 is equipped with two 10Gbps USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a headphone jack. In comparison, Apple’s Neo has two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, with one USB-C port limited to USB 2 speeds.
Both laptops come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, although Windows 11 generally requires more RAM than macOS. Microsoft has recently started efforts to reduce the operating system's memory demands, which should benefit more affordable Windows laptops in the future.
The OmniBook 3 is now available for preorder on Amazon, and Best Buy is offering it for $499.99 as part of its 60th Anniversary Sale until August 24, 2026.

A new iMac is set to be released before the end of 2026, but don’t expect much beyond the M6.
If past trends are any indication, Apple’s M6 iMac may launch after the September iPhone event.
For anyone waiting on a new iMac, the wait may not be much longer. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is readying an updated model that should be available before the end of 2026. This update is expected to include Apple’s forthcoming M6 chip along with some new color options. However, buyers shouldn’t anticipate substantial changes to the all-in-one desktop this year. Gurman indicates that the new model will retain the familiar 24-inch design without introducing a larger screen, OLED display, or redesigning the chassis.
