Thirteen years later, Amazon is finally fulfilling that pledge on a larger scale. The company has revealed that Prime Air will be extending its reach to nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026, representing a sixfold increase from its current status.

      What is the extent of this expansion?

      Currently, Prime Air operates from just 11 locations across seven states, which include Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. It will soon add Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, Syracuse, and Boise, with additional communities expected to be included by the end of the year.

      David Carbon, the vice president overseeing Prime Air, informed staff during an internal meeting in March that the division anticipates completing 1 million total deliveries this year, branding it the highest-demand drone delivery service in the market. Amazon claims to have already fulfilled hundreds of thousands of drone deliveries in 2026 alone, with thousands occurring on a daily basis.

      Orders can be delivered in as little as 30 minutes, although most are closer to the one-hour mark. The pricing structure is straightforward as well. Delivery is free for Prime members on orders over $50, $2.99 for Prime members on smaller orders, and $4.99 for non-members.

      What items can be delivered by drone, and how safe is this service?

      Drones can transport packages weighing up to 5 pounds, which Amazon states encompasses over 60% of its most commonly ordered items, such as groceries, electronics, cosmetics, and medications.

      Nonetheless, the safety of drone deliveries has come under scrutiny. Last October, Amazon's drones collided with a crane in Arizona and severed an internet cable in Texas the following November, leading to federal investigations, as well as a separate inquiry in the UK following a drone crash in England. Amazon possesses FAA Part 135 certification, the same level used for commercial airlines, and asserts that its Detect and Avoid system enables drones to make real-time safety decisions autonomously.
