Google is offering college students a complimentary year of AI Pro along with a variety of study tools.
Google is launching a range of study tools within Search and Gemini for the upcoming school year. Additionally, eligible college students will receive a free year of its paid AI plan. The company outlined these updates in a back-to-school announcement on Wednesday.
The main highlight is the complimentary subscription. According to Google, eligible college students in the United States can access one year of Google AI Pro at no charge. This plan typically costs $200 annually or $20 monthly, as noted by Engadget reporter Lawrence Bonk.
The plan includes several features. Students can enjoy higher usage limits in Gemini, which Engadget estimated to be four times the standard cap. They also gain access to Google’s Spark agentic platform and Gemini within Workspace applications like Gmail and Docs. Additionally, the offer includes 5TB of cloud storage and a subscription to Google Health Premium, which connects to Fitbit and other health trackers.
The offer and its conditions:
Students located outside the United States are presented with a different package. Google is providing them with a year of Google AI Plus, a less expensive plan that usually costs $5 per month. This package includes increased Gemini usage limits and 400GB of storage, along with discounts on AI Pro and YouTube Premium.
However, there is a common stipulation associated with such offers. As noted by Engadget, the subscription will automatically renew at full price after one year. Google is also offering a discounted bundle of AI Pro and YouTube Premium for $9 a month, which is cheaper than many standalone music streaming services, according to Engadget.
The free year serves as a strategic move to expand Gemini’s user base. Engadget referred to it as a probable initiative to enhance Gemini’s user engagement. In July, Google announced that Gemini surpassed a billion monthly users and is competing with OpenAI for a share of the AI market.
A dedicated student hub in Gemini
The product enhancements focus on educational tools. Google is introducing a specific student hub within the Gemini app, as reported by The Verge's Terrence O’Brien. This hub consolidates Gemini’s learning tools, including study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes. Its launch coincides with the back-to-school season, when students prepare their study resources for the term.
The study notebooks will also see improvements, incorporating support for graphs and images, according to The Verge. Gemini can add test dates and deadlines to a student's Google Calendar based on their syllabus, the report indicated. Google describes these notebooks as personalized study plans that utilize short diagnostic quizzes to identify knowledge gaps and then segment the material into manageable portions.
Google is also enhancing its Deep Research feature in Gemini Live, which operates in a voice-responsive mode. Students can request detailed research reports from Gemini and verbally discuss the findings, as reported by The Verge. If the report takes time to generate, students can exit the chat and lock their phone, with Gemini notifying them once it's finished.
A new Lens tool is set to be released in the coming weeks. In the Google app, students will have the capability to photograph a worksheet, according to The Verge. Gemini can then clarify a concept, assist with difficult subjects, or provide guidance after an error.
New study tools in Search
These enhancements also extend to Google Search. Students can create interactive visuals to better grasp challenging topics, as reported by TechCrunch's Aisha Malik. For instance, searching for "pH scale" will yield an interactive visual within an AI Overview.
A follow-up inquiry can lead to a more tailored experience. For example, asking to map citrus fruits on the pH scale triggers a customized interaction, according to TechCrunch. Furthermore, students can request personalized practice quizzes on any subject, including standardized tests such as the SAT. Google offers complete practice SAT tests in Gemini at no cost.
Gemini is also acquiring 3D simulations. For instance, a prompt like “show me how DNA works in 3D” will return an interactive structure that students can rotate and zoom in on, as reported by TechCrunch. Responses can now include tables, grids, and simulations designed specifically for the prompt, rather than just standard text.
Search can also convert a student’s documents into study materials. Users can upload a PDF, a slideshow, or a photo of handwritten notes and request that Search create a one-page summary of the key concepts, TechCrunch mentioned. A distinct Lens tool within Search will guide students step-by-step through problems. This feature will be rolled out in the upcoming weeks, according to TechCrunch.
Competing for the classroom
This launch is Google’s latest endeavor to establish Gemini as the go-to assistant for students. It competes with OpenAI, which offers its own educational features, according to TechCrunch. It also faces competition from educational startups like Knowt and Gauth, which provide their own study and practice tools.
Google positions these tools as safe by design and based on educational research, with educators leading the charge. The announcement was authored by Jennifer Shen and the Search summary was crafted
