      General Motors is initiating a significant change for its electric vehicles: every GM EV for the 2027 model year will be equipped with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. This update will apply to Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC models, enabling drivers to connect directly to compatible Tesla Superchargers and other NACS fast-charging networks without needing to carry a DC charging adapter.

      As per a report from Electrek, this update includes GM’s entire 2027 EV lineup, such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Escalade IQL, Lyriq, Optiq, and Vistiq; Chevrolet Bolt EV, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV; and the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, Hummer EV SUV, and Sierra EV.

      This change is significant because charging standards have been one of the more cumbersome aspects of owning an EV. Most 2026 GM electric vehicles still utilize the older CCS1 connector, which means owners must use GM’s $275 NACS DC adapter to access compatible Tesla Superchargers and other NACS fast chargers.

      The 2026 Cadillac Optiq has already adopted this new standard, and the revamped Chevrolet Bolt, set to arrive in 2026 as a 2027 model, will also come with a native NACS port. However, those purchasing a 2027 GM EV will still need adapters for some older charging infrastructure. CCS1 DC fast chargers will require a separate adapter, while most existing Level 2 charging stations utilize the J1772 connector. GM offers these adapters for $189 and $67, respectively, or a bundled price of $256.

      For anyone looking to buy a new GM EV, this native port will eliminate one particularly frustrating piece of equipment from the charging process. Drivers should be able to connect to a compatible Tesla Supercharger without having to pull an adapter out of the trunk.

      GM is also working to minimize the number of charging applications and accounts that EV owners must manage. Energy Pass is integrated within the MyChevrolet, MyCadillac, and MyGMC apps, letting drivers register and make payments across multiple charging networks from one account.

      Currently supported networks include Tesla Supercharger, IONNA, Electrify America, and ChargePoint, with EVgo expected to be added later. GM claims that these combined networks cover nearly 70% of U.S. DC fast chargers. The Plug & Charge feature is also being implemented at compatible locations, allowing the vehicle to handle authentication while payments are processed automatically. This feature is already available at IONNA and is set to expand to additional networks, including Tesla Superchargers.

      GM's 2027 lineup should simplify fast charging considerably, particularly for long-distance travel. However, it will still be beneficial to keep CCS1 and J1772 adapters in the trunk, as the charging standard may be stabilizing, but the older infrastructure won't vanish immediately.
