OpenAI is not merely changing its revenue leader; it is overhauling the entire sales operation.
OpenAI's chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, is stepping down after eight months in her role. She is leaving "to pursue other opportunities," as stated by the company on Thursday, and will assist in the transition with the business team. Dali Rajic, who previously served as president and chief operating officer of Wiz, will take over her position.
OpenAI has appreciated Dresser's contributions, crediting her with building the team, enhancing relationships with key customers, and laying the "commercial foundation that has brought our business to this point." She joined OpenAI in December following over ten years at Salesforce, where she became the chief executive of Slack in 2023.
The timing coincides with the departure of Brad Lightcap, who left on Tuesday after dedicating eight years to OpenAI, four of which he served as chief operating officer. Dresser's exit marks the tenth senior departure since April.
This list of departures includes several executives such as chief product officer Kevin Weil, applications chief Fidji Simo, chief marketing officer Kate Rouch, Sora architect Bill Peebles, safety head Johannes Heidecke, and AI ethics head Chloé Bakalar. The loss of the individual responsible for revenue is a significant concern.
The appointment of Rajic indicates OpenAI's direction. He led Wiz as president and chief operating officer through its acquisition by Google for $32 billion, a deal that finalized in March. Prior to that role, he was president and COO of Zscaler and held the position of chief customer and revenue officer at AppDynamics.
OpenAI is looking for Rajic to develop what it calls a revenue operating system. President Greg Brockman emphasized that the company is "transitioning into a compute-powered economy, with AI becoming integrated into all workflows," and that Rajic will help "turn what we’ve learned into repeatable execution."
Additionally, the announcement includes a key detail: OpenAI has partnered with Chad Peets and RPT Partners, a firm specializing in recruiting sales leadership, to create what it describes as a world-class go-to-market team. Companies satisfied with their sales organizations typically do not seek to rebuild them.
The business environment that Rajic will inherit is substantial. OpenAI states its products reach over a billion users weekly and serve more than two million businesses, which is double the number of companies from a year ago.
OpenAI is also preparing for public scrutiny, having filed confidentially for a listing and completed a $7 billion employee tender offer that values the company at $852 billion, although reports suggest it may delay its public offering until 2027 to aim for a valuation of $1 trillion.
OpenAI expressed "deep gratitude" for Dresser’s leadership but did not disclose the reasons for her departure, and neither has she.
