WhatsApp's newly introduced Scam Alert feature will identify scam messages while ensuring the privacy of your chats.
Meta's new AI model will alert users to scams while maintaining encryption.
Scammers have been targeting WhatsApp users for many years, and the statistics highlight this. The FTC reports that victims have claimed losses totaling $425 million due to WhatsApp scams alone, contributing to a larger $2.1 billion loss attributed to social media scams in 2025.
In response, Meta is introducing Scam Alert, a new optional feature currently in limited beta that utilizes artificial intelligence to identify suspicious messages without accessing the actual content of conversations.
How does Scam Alert detect scams without compromising encryption?
Scam Alert operates an AI model directly on users' phones rather than on Meta’s servers. Once activated, the app downloads this model, which then scans incoming messages from contacts outside of your saved list, looking for patterns associated with known scams, such as conversational structure and specific language indicators.
Meta claims that no message content leaves your device for this classification process, and nothing is automatically reported to WhatsApp or Meta unless you choose to do so. This ensures compatibility with WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, as your private conversations remain on your device and do not reach Meta’s servers.
What happens when a scam is detected?
If the model identifies a potential scam, you will receive a warning within that specific chat, which only you can see, while the sender remains unaware. From there, you can choose to block the sender, report the conversation, or continue chatting if you prefer.
If a warning is incorrect, you can mark that chat as trusted, and Scam Alert will cease to flag it in the future. When you designate a chat as trusted, you also have the option to share the last five messages with WhatsApp to assist in enhancing the model's accuracy.
The Scam Alert feature builds upon Meta’s previous efforts in scam detection regarding suspicious device connection requests, providing an additional layer of AI-driven protection throughout the platform.
The iPhone X is now obsolete, as well as that old MacBook Pro.
No worries! Only the 2018 MacBook Pro is obsolete.
The iPhone X and 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro have officially been classified as obsolete products by Apple, indicating the end of official hardware support for these two devices that once symbolized the company's future. Apple has updated its support documentation, moving these products from the vintage category to the obsolete category. This distinction is significant because once a device is deemed obsolete, Apple halts hardware service for it, and authorized service providers can no longer order parts from Apple.
The Pixel 11 Pro is an impressive device, and its camera encourages experimentation.
I tested the Pixel 11 Pros, and one small feature left me eager for more.
Google has previously created some attractive smartphones, and the new Pixel 11 Pro series has further enhanced its aesthetic appeal. Recent Pixel Pro models have ranked among the most premium Android smartphones I've experienced, and a brief encounter with the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL showed me that Google is refining its design even more. The Pixel 11 proves to be a surprisingly appealing base flagship, while the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL maintain this positive momentum. These phones are lighter, the camera visor is now sleeker, the displays are brighter, and the smaller Pro model finally features faster Pixelsnap charging. Google has also introduced HiLight and an innovative approach to its camera software.
Pixel 11 Pro Fold versus Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: Google takes a cautious approach, while Samsung goes all-in.
Despite both Google and Samsung agreeing that a book-style foldable can serve as a tablet replacement while retaining the best features of a conventional flagship smartphone, they have created two distinctly different devices to demonstrate this. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold relies on Google's software intelligence and a notably rare durability rating, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra focuses on powerful hardware, a 200MP camera, and Samsung's most advanced multitasking software to date. So, which is more suitable for you? Let’s explore in this comprehensive comparison of the two.
