I got some hands-on experience with the Pixel 11, and Google's most affordable flagship finally has everything it needs.

      When considering any premium smartphone series, it's evident that the Pro or Ultra models receive the most affection, care, and detail. Base flagship models must strike a balance between accessibility and a premium feel. Apple's iPhone 17 exemplifies this balance, while the Galaxy S26 stands out as another solid choice, despite some shortcomings.

      In contrast, Google seemed to lag behind its rivals with the Pixel 10. Therefore, during my brief interaction with the Pixel 11, I anticipated a similar impression – and gratefully, the latest standard Pixel model proves to be more competitive than its predecessor.

      Although it still trails the pricier Pro models in aspects like display and camera features, the overall experience is significantly more assured this time. Google's approach ensures that the hardware integrates seamlessly with the software, and the performance upgrades on the Pixel 11 are impressive.

      How the Pixel 11 has the right specs to impress again

      The Pixel 11 hasn't experienced a dramatic redesign. Instead, it offers thoughtful improvements across various aspects. It retains the well-known 6.3-inch size, with display specifications almost identical to those of the Pixel 10. I appreciate compact phones, so this continuity suited me just fine.

      During my hands-on session, the screen proved sharp, responsive, and bright, creating a positive initial impression. Although a 1-120Hz LTPO display remains exclusive to the Pro version, the standard Pixel meets my expectations for a contemporary flagship display.

      One aspect I found commendable was that the Pixel 11 has become lighter. While the Pixel 10 weighed 204 grams, the Pixel 11 now weighs 197 grams, all while maintaining the same 8.6mm thickness and slightly increasing battery capacity from 4,970mAh to 4,985mAh. This isn't revolutionary, but the enhancements significantly improve comfort for one-handed use.

      The storage upgrade is another positive feature. The Pixel 11 begins with 256GB and 12GB of RAM, omitting the 128GB variant. This change technically raises the entry-level price from $799 to $899, but even the 256GB Pixel 10 launched at $899 last year.

      Three cameras deliver considerable value when paired with a capable main sensor

      Google introduced a 5x telephoto lens on the base model of the Pixel 10, and the Pixel 11 continues this trend. It features a 48MP main camera, 13MP ultra-wide, and a 10.8MP 5x telephoto camera with Super Zoom capabilities extending to 30x. The Pixel 9 is an interesting point of comparison, with its 50MP main camera and 48MP ultra-wide, which were quite effective. The Pixel 11, however, excels in versatility.

      In today's smartphone landscape, using a phone without a telephoto lens can feel limiting. While preferences for focal lengths may vary, the 5x telephoto lens provides enjoyable shooting experiences. With 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 10x optical-quality options available on this relatively compact Pixel, I find myself with much greater freedom in framing shots.

      Google has also enhanced the main camera compared to the Pixel 10. The new 48MP sensor is bigger, and Google claims it's 56% more sensitive to light. It will require extensive testing for me to evaluate this, particularly for low-light conditions. Nonetheless, I appreciate the focus this year on improving the base model. The Pixel 11's camera doesn't compel you to think solely about the Pro version.

      Google maintains its advantage with software

      The hardware only constitutes part of the Pixel narrative. The Pixel 11 launches with Android 17 and is set to receive seven years of OS, security, and Pixel updates. It also becomes one of the first devices to showcase Google's latest Android and Gemini features. I'm especially interested in testing the new Creator Suite.

      Google has integrated creator-focused video tools directly into the camera, including a built-in teleprompter. Features like Magic Capture, Camera Looks, improved voice recording options, and other enhancements continue Google's trend of maximizing the usefulness of its cameras through software.

      The Gemini Intelligence and the company's initiative to run more AI processes locally persist with the Tensor G6. I wouldn't buy the Pixel 11 solely for one software feature. Google has long provided new capabilities to older Pixels via Feature Drops, and some additions for Pixel 11 might eventually be available for previous models.

      What you're investing in is early access. For those who appreciate Google’s interpretation of Android, having quick access to new Android versions and Pixel features remains one of the strongest reasons to own the company’s hardware.
