AI is identifying security vulnerabilities in Apple products more quickly than Apple can address them.

      Apple has restricted the number of active bug reports researchers can maintain as AI tools generate both legitimate Mac vulnerabilities and an influx of dubious submissions, as reported by the Financial Times.

      Some reports detail imagined or purely hypothetical risks, while others reveal serious vulnerabilities that necessitate patches. Bynario informed the FT that it discovered over 50 potential macOS flaws within three weeks, including a privilege-escalation chain that could give an attacker complete control of a Mac.

      Every report still requires human validation, although Apple is now utilizing AI to assist in managing the backlog. Identifying potential weaknesses is becoming easier, whereas determining which ones present an immediate risk has become more challenging.

      How credible are the flaws identified by AI?

      Bynario has demonstrated that its system produces more than just automated speculation. Its Atlas platform utilized GPT-5.5 to reveal a macOS Screen Sharing vulnerability that allowed an authenticated VNC viewer to access protected data and create files with root privileges.

      The exploit required that Screen Sharing or Remote Management be turned on, along with legacy VNC password access. Apple assigned it CVE-2026-43760 and issued a fix in macOS Tahoe 26.6.

      Bynario also illustrated how the weakness could be exploited to execute commands as root, providing Apple with a working exploit to evaluate rather than a vague alert stemming from a code scan.

      The necessity for Apple to utilize similar AI tools

      Recent security advisories from Apple acknowledge researchers collaborating with Claude for a kernel vulnerability. OpenAI Codex Security has also played a role in discovering various WebKit vulnerabilities.

      AI-assisted research is already playing a part in the fixes deployed for macOS and Safari. If submissions are too tightly controlled, it could hinder beneficial discoveries, while keeping the process completely open might overwhelm Apple’s team with deceptive submissions.

      The challenge lies in verifying findings. AI models can quickly generate potential attack vectors, but Apple must replicate the behaviors, confirm the conditions needed, and assess how urgently a fix is needed.

      Apple has revamped its bug bounty program to focus on stronger evidence. The maximum reward has now surpassed $5 million for the most severe exploit chains, while Target Flags assist researchers in demonstrating that a flaw impacts protected areas of the system.

      This framework enables Apple to better differentiate confirmed exploits from automated conjecture. Mac users themselves cannot resolve the reporting backlog, but they can mitigate their risk by promptly installing security updates. AI bug hunting is already uncovering flaws that end up in Apple’s patch queue.
