Chinese handheld manufacturer Ayaneo has introduced the Konkr Pocket Advance, a contemporary reinterpretation of the legendary Game Boy Advance that updates nearly all components of the original while maintaining the horizontal design that endeared Nintendo's console to many.

      Instead of crafting a nostalgia item that merely resembles the original, Ayaneo is aiming at the expanding retro gaming market with modern technology. The Konkr Pocket Advance comes equipped with a higher-resolution display, extra controls, USB-C connectivity, and wireless capabilities, positioning it as a modern handheld influenced by one of gaming's most significant consoles, rather than merely a replica.

      This announcement coincides with the growing status of retro handhelds as a legitimate product category rather than a niche pastime. Ayaneo has also incorporated a complete set of ABXY buttons, extra menu and shoulder buttons, USB-C, microSD expansion, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and even a dedicated volume wheel.

      The handheld will initially be available in two color choices: a navy blue reminiscent of the classic Indigo Game Boy Advance and a coral orange that echoes Nintendo’s Spice Orange edition, which was previously exclusive to Japan. Although Ayaneo has not yet disclosed pricing or a release date, they have stated that the device will launch later this year. Unlike some of its previous limited-production handhelds, the company anticipates broader availability for the Pocket Advance.

      Ayaneo’s latest handheld underscores a wider trend that Nintendo has been surprisingly reserved about.
