Chinese handheld manufacturer Ayaneo has introduced the Konkr Pocket Advance, a modern interpretation of the classic Game Boy Advance that enhances nearly every aspect of the original while maintaining the beloved horizontal layout.

      Instead of crafting a nostalgia piece that merely resembles the original, Ayaneo is targeting the expanding retro gaming market with contemporary hardware. The Konkr Pocket Advance boasts a higher-resolution display, extra controls, USB-C connectivity, and wireless capabilities, transforming it from a mere replica into a modern handheld inspired by one of gaming's landmark consoles.

      The announcement coincides with the rise of retro handhelds, which are transitioning into a legitimate product category rather than remaining a niche hobby. Companies such as Anbernic, Retroid, Miyoo, and Ayaneo have demonstrated over recent years that there is a strong demand for devices centered around classic games rather than cutting-edge graphics.

      A familiar design combined with modern technology

      At first sight, the Konkr Pocket Advance unmistakably draws inspiration from the original Game Boy Advance. It retains the characteristic horizontal design and features a 3.5-inch display boasting a 960 × 640 resolution, which is significantly sharper than the original Nintendo hardware. Ayaneo has also included a complete set of ABXY buttons, extra menu and shoulder buttons, USB-C, microSD expansion, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and even a dedicated volume wheel.

      The handheld will be initially available in two color options: a navy blue that pays homage to the classic Indigo Game Boy Advance and a coral orange reminiscent of Nintendo’s Spice Orange edition, which was previously exclusive to Japan. Unlike some of its earlier limited-production models, the company anticipates wider availability for the Pocket Advance.
