Season 4 of Ted Lasso is on the way, featuring two significant changes.

After a three-year hiatus, Ted Lasso is set to make its return to Apple TV+, but season four won’t just be a continuation of the previous season. Instead, Apple is rebooting one of its major original series with a new storyline, an updated cast, and significant changes behind the scenes that could impact the Emmy-winning comedy's ability to recapture the magic that turned it into a worldwide sensation.

The new season is set to debut on August 4, featuring Jason Sudeikis back as Ted Lasso. However, this time Ted will not be leading AFC Richmond’s men’s team; he will instead take the helm of the Lady Greyhounds, shifting the spotlight to women’s football and introducing a number of new characters to the franchise. This is the most significant narrative shift since the series first launched in 2020.

For Apple, the implications are more far-reaching than they might seem. Ted Lasso is still one of the cornerstones of Apple TV+, and a successful fourth season would solidify the company's ability to develop its flagship series while preserving the elements that contributed to its initial success.

The Lady Greyhounds take center stage

Season four will feature familiar characters, including Ted, Rebecca, Keeley, Roy Kent, and Coach Beard, but several members of AFC Richmond’s male roster will not be returning as main cast members. As reported by 9to5Mac, Jamie Tartt, Dani Rojas, Sam Obisanya, Isaac McAdoo, and Colin Hughes will not be series regulars, although some might appear in cameo roles. The status of Nick Mohammed’s Nate Shelley also remains unclear, with speculation about his potential involvement.

The new women's team introduces a variety of fresh characters, such as Tanya Reynolds as assistant coach Alice Chilton, as well as players Gemma, Boots, Lizzie, Niamh, and Siobhan. Rather than merely continuing AFC Richmond's narrative, Apple seems to be using the new team to revitalize the show while maintaining its emotional essence.

This strategy appears to be wise. Prolonging a cherished series without making changes often results in diminishing returns, especially after a contentious third season. By presenting a new team instead of rehashing past storylines, Ted Lasso has an opportunity to evolve while still retaining its core identity.

Apple has also altered behind-the-scenes dynamics

The creative revamp goes beyond the cast changes. In the first two seasons, Bill Lawrence was instrumental in shaping Ted Lasso alongside Jason Sudeikis. His involvement lessened significantly in season three, a shift many critics and fans associated with the show's inconsistent storytelling.

For season four, Apple has enlisted experienced television producer Jack Burditt, known for his work on 30 Rock and Modern Family, to collaborate with Sudeikis. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Burditt has helped oversee production and the writers’ room while Sudeikis continues to guide the show’s creative direction. Early responses indicate that their partnership may have restored some clarity that viewers found lacking in the previous season.

Ultimately, Ted Lasso doesn’t need to transform television; it simply needs to remind viewers why they originally fell in love with its optimism, humor, and heartfelt storytelling. Apple has made changes to both the players and some of the decision-makers behind the scenes. Whether these adjustments will result in another outstanding season will soon be revealed when the series returns next week.
