Season 4 of Ted Lasso is approaching with two significant updates.

      After a three-year hiatus, Ted Lasso is making its much-anticipated return to Apple TV+, but the fourth season will not directly continue from where the last one left off. Instead, Apple is rebooting one of its most significant original series with a new concept, a refreshed cast, and key behind-the-scenes alterations that could influence whether the Emmy-winning comedy can recapture the magic that turned it into a worldwide sensation.

      The upcoming season is set to debut on August 4, featuring Jason Sudeikis back as Ted Lasso. However, this time he will not be at the helm of AFC Richmond’s men's team. Instead, Ted will coach the Lady Greyhounds, shifting the show’s spotlight to women’s football while introducing several new characters to the series. This represents the most substantial narrative shift since its inception in 2020.

      For Apple, the stakes are higher than they might seem. Ted Lasso is still one of Apple TV+’s cornerstone originals, and a successful fourth season could strengthen the company's capacity to evolve its flagship franchises without compromising their original appeal.

      The Lady Greyhounds take center stage

      While season four brings back familiar faces like Ted, Rebecca, Keeley, Roy Kent, and Coach Beard, several regulars from the men’s team of AFC Richmond will not be returning. Reports from 9to5Mac indicate that Jamie Tartt, Dani Rojas, Sam Obisanya, Isaac McAdoo, and Colin Hughes are no longer part of the primary cast, although some may appear in brief roles. The fate of Nick Mohammed’s Nate Shelley is also unclear, with discussions suggesting he might appear in some form.

      The new women’s team introduces a fresh set of characters, featuring Tanya Reynolds as assistant coach Alice Chilton, along with players Gemma, Boots, Lizzie, Niamh, and Siobhan. Rather than merely extending AFC Richmond’s storyline, Apple seems to be leveraging the new team to reboot the series while maintaining its familiar emotional essence.

      This is a wise decision. Continuing a beloved series without making any changes often results in diminishing quality, especially after a contentious third season. By introducing a new team rather than rehashing previous narratives, Ted Lasso has the opportunity to evolve while still staying true to itself.

      Apple has also made changes behind the scenes

      The creative transformation goes beyond the cast. During the initial two seasons, Bill Lawrence was instrumental in shaping Ted Lasso alongside Jason Sudeikis, but his involvement significantly decreased in season three, a shift that many critics and fans associated with the show’s inconsistent storytelling.

      For the fourth season, Apple has enlisted experienced television producer Jack Burditt, known for 30 Rock and Modern Family, to collaborate with Sudeikis. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Burditt helped oversee production and the writers’ room while Sudeikis continued to steer the show’s creative direction. Early feedback indicates that their partnership may have reinstated some of the focus that viewers felt was lost in the previous season.

      In essence, Ted Lasso does not need to drastically change television. It simply has to remind audiences of the optimism, humor, and emotional storytelling that initially drew them in. Apple has altered both the players on the field and some of the key figures behind the scenes. Whether these adjustments will lead to another championship-caliber season will be revealed when the series returns next week.
