While most satellite startups are focused on creating smaller devices, K2 Space is intentionally taking a different approach by aiming to build larger satellites. Recently, the company secured $500 million in funding to continue its expansion.
K2 announced on Thursday that it has completed a $500 million Series D funding round, reaching a valuation of $6.8 billion. The round was led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ, with support from Alphabet’s CapitalG, Lightspeed, and ARK Invest. This new valuation more than doubles the $3 billion valuation from a few months ago. To date, K2 has raised over $1 billion, backed by more than $1 billion in signed contracts.
K2's strategy is unconventional. While the majority of the industry seeks to reduce satellite size to lower launch expenses, K2 believes that power is key to a satellite’s capabilities in orbit, leading them to construct larger, high-power satellites instead.
The evidence of their approach is already in orbit. K2's first "mega-class" satellite, Gravitas, was launched in March aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Weighing two tonnes and generating 20 kilowatts, it carried multiple payloads for clients including the US military, as reported by GeekWire.
The company manufactures over 85% of each satellite in-house. Its 180,000-square-foot facility in Torrance, California, is designed to produce up to 100 satellites annually. K2 asserts that this in-house production model enables them to create large satellites efficiently and affordably.
A significant portion of their contracts is coming from military sources. K2 is set to provide 30 satellites for SES’s meoSphere network, develop spacecraft for the Anduril-led Golden Dome missile defense initiative, and serve as a bus provider for a US Space Force satcom project, marking its first official Pentagon program. This aligns with a broader increase in funding for defense-related space projects.
Looking further ahead, K2 has a more ambitious goal. By late 2028, the company aims to launch a 100-kilowatt "Giga" satellite designed to handle substantial computing tasks in orbit. Essentially, this is a step towards creating AI data centers in space, a vision highlighted by the CEO in a conversation with Bloomberg.
K2 was established in 2022 by brothers Karan and Neel Kunjur, the latter being a former engineer at SpaceX. This funding round occurs amidst a surge of investment across various sectors of the space industry, including launch services, defense, and orbital infrastructure.
However, the challenges are significant. Achieving the production of 100 large satellites annually is a manufacturing challenge that has yet to be accomplished, and the concept of space-based data centers is still in its infancy and unproven. K2’s next mission, Trinity, is expected to launch multiple satellites in early 2027. The gamble involves transitioning from a single satellite to hundreds, with the future of orbital data centers representing the next level of uncertainty.
