A report from 9to5Google indicates that the long-speculated Pixel Tag has finally made an appearance. The accessory has surfaced in various online listings, and the report also includes what seems to be its first leaked image, providing an initial glimpse of Google’s alternative to Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag.
A distinctive tracker design
In contrast to most Bluetooth trackers currently available, the Pixel Tag does not appear to conform to the standard circular or square format. The leaked image suggests a narrow, pill-shaped design that distinctly differentiates it from competitors. Interestingly, this design seems to omit a built-in hole or loop for attaching to keys, luggage, or bags. If true, Google might depend on optional accessories or protective cases for mounting the tracker, similar to Apple's method with the AirTag. The upcoming Galaxy SmartTag 3 from Samsung is also rumored to forego the built-in attachment hole.

The online listings reportedly refer to the accessory by the model number GA12506, with the marketing name being Google Pixel Tag, and include a color option known as Fog Light. Currently, technical specifications are limited. There’s no confirmation yet on whether the tracker will feature Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for precise location tracking or if it will use a replaceable battery or a rechargeable one—these remain important unanswered questions.

One of the retail listings also provides insight into what Google promises. The translated description (via 9to5Google) states that the Pixel Tag is intended to assist users in quickly locating common items such as keys, wallets, and luggage through Google’s secure Find My Device network. It also mentions a built-in speaker to facilitate nearby searches and emphasizes privacy measures concerning location tracking.

This all aligns perfectly with what is expected from a current Bluetooth tracker, but the larger narrative is its implication for Google’s ecosystem. The Find Hub on Android has seen steady improvements over the past year, and the introduction of a Google-made tracker would finally provide Pixel users with a seamless solution that does not rely on third-party brands. With Google’s Pixel 11 event set for August 12, the timing appears conducive to an official announcement. However, as this is the first significant leak related to the accessory, it is premature to conclude whether the Pixel Tag will launch alongside the new phones or come out later. For now, it seems Google's long-awaited competitor to the AirTag is poised to make its debut.
