The surge in AI has brought GPUs into the spotlight, but the unassuming chips that connect thousands of these GPUs are quietly gaining similar importance. Xsight Labs, an Israeli semiconductor manufacturer, announced on Thursday that it has secured over $300 million at a valuation of $2.8 billion, with Fidelity leading the investment round. This valuation reflects more than a fivefold increase since 2021, achieved within a single year.
Xsight develops the essential infrastructure for AI data centers. Its two chips, the E1 processor and the X2 switch, facilitate data transfer among servers, memory, and networks. As AI models expand, the movement of data has become a critical bottleneck in the industry, elevating the importance of the connections between GPUs.
Challenging Nvidia’s other monopoly
Nvidia’s influence extends beyond just selling GPUs; it also commands dominance over the networking layer following its acquisition of Mellanox. In contrast, Xsight offers an open and programmable alternative to proprietary systems. Its chips operate on standard Linux and SONiC, allowing operators to reprogram the X2 switch in software after deployment, rather than waiting for new hardware. CEO Yossi Meyouhas stated that the market sought "a high-performance alternative to closed, legacy architectures." Xsight is part of a growing movement of startups aiming to lessen Nvidia’s control over the AI ecosystem.
Already making strides
This is not merely a research endeavor. Several global network providers, including SpaceX’s Starlink, have chosen Xsight's technology. Last week, its processors successfully passed testing on SpaceX’s new Starlink V3 satellites, according to Globes. Programmable chips are particularly advantageous in space, where issues can be remedied through software updates rather than hardware replacements.
The key advantage is efficiency. The E1 is the first 800-gigabit data processor to be commercially available, operating below 75 watts. Meanwhile, the X2 switch achieves a throughput of 12.8 terabits per second while consuming 40% less power than older switch models. As the energy costs associated with AI continue to rise, every watt conserved is a selling point.
A track record of successful exits
The backgrounds of its founders bolster its credibility. Established in 2017 by veterans of EZchip, which was acquired by Mellanox in 2016, Xsight is helmed by chairman Avigdor Willenz, a seasoned entrepreneur who has previously sold companies to Marvell, Amazon, and Intel. His investors have reiterated their support, with the funding round attracting interest from Fidelity, Intel Capital, T. Rowe Price, Battery Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners, among others. This financing will support the development of future chip generations and expand sales efforts among major hyperscalers.
The influx of investment into AI infrastructure is no longer focused solely on GPUs. It is now encompassing all components that support them, from power systems to the cabling within racks. Xsight is banking on the idea that the future leaders in networking will be those that embrace openness.
