Meta will turn off the camera on AI smart glasses if you interfere with or obstruct the indicator light.
Meta will also eliminate all posts and advertisements that promote tampering services and products.
Since the release of its initial smart glasses developed in partnership with Ray-Ban, Meta has gained a reputation for being a tool for inappropriate surveillance. The backlash is warranted, as many individuals are uncomfortable being recorded or photographed without their consent. In response, Meta is taking definitive measures to ensure that the camera-equipped smart glasses do not infringe upon anyone's privacy. The company has announced that it will deactivate the onboard camera of the smart glasses if the white LED indicator light is covered or tampered with.
What’s happening?
Meta maintains that the white LED indicator is an alert for anyone within the camera's field of view. “We are constantly enhancing our ability to detect tampering, and now we’re updating the glasses to deactivate the camera if they sense that the LED has been physically tampered with or destroyed. No other camera system has achieved this, and we’re proud to lead the industry in this direction,” the company stated in an official announcement.
Meta is modifying the smart glasses so that if the LED system is physically obstructed or disabled, the camera will be completely inoperative. This update will first be applied to the second-generation Meta smart glasses. For context, Meta currently offers smart glasses developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban and Oakley. Recently, the company also unveiled a new line created independently, without any external brand collaboration, and at a more affordable price point.
Better late than never
In recent months, multiple reports have highlighted an underground market where owners of Meta AI smart glasses can have the LED indicator lights disabled. Numerous online listings offering such services have also been identified. Meta intends to take action against these activities.
The company announced that it will not only disable camera functionality on devices with a tampered or obstructed LED light, but it will also remove all advertisements, posts, and online listings that promote these services from its platform. Furthermore, Meta plans to impose bans on accounts that provide such services and aims to pursue legal action against entities or businesses involved in these activities.
