The initial AI model from SpaceXAI and Cursor might be launched today.
SpaceXAI and Cursor may launch their first collaboratively developed AI model as early as Wednesday, as reported by The Information. An internal memo places it in competition with Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5.
Elon Musk’s recently renamed AI company is preparing to test its capabilities against leading models. SpaceXAI and Cursor aim to unveil their first jointly built model this week, according to an internal communication.
Earlier in the week, they delayed the launch to enhance the model’s efficiency, as stated in the memo. Their goal is to enable fast information processing, which would make their model competitive with Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5. OpenAI has recently received approval for a broader rollout of GPT-5.6.
Two-parent model
The collaboration is strategic. SpaceX plans to acquire Cursor, the AI coding tool, in a $60 billion all-stock transaction. The two companies have been collaborating for several months.
Last month, Musk mentioned that SpaceX and Tesla employees had tested the joint model. Cursor CEO Michael Truell informed customers that his company had developed a model from scratch using Colossus, xAI’s supercomputer, stating it would go up against Anthropic and OpenAI directly.
The memo doesn’t specify the model's name. Musk has previously referred to an unreleased version called Grok in beta. Cursor also has its own coding model named Composer. Cursor declined to comment, and SpaceXAI did not respond to a request for remarks.
From xAI to SpaceXAI
A launch this week would be the first significant product milestone under the new branding. Musk integrated xAI into SpaceX and rebranded it as SpaceXAI on Monday. He had announced this intention in May, indicating that xAI would no longer function as a separate entity. This transition occurred five months following the merger of the two companies.
Musk envisions data centers in orbit powered by solar energy, although that concept remains several years away. Meanwhile, Cursor’s tools provide the company with immediate offerings.
Importance of the launch
The competition in AI now includes a Musk-backed contender with substantial financial resources. Last year, SpaceX invested $12.7 billion in AI, which is over three times what it spent on space. A model that genuinely competes with Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5 would present a significant challenge to the current leaders. However, for now, the memo remains a statement rather than a definitive measure.
The real validation will come once the model is launched, potentially as soon as today.
