BMW unveils the revamped X5 featuring petrol, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen variants.
BMW has unveiled the fifth generation of the X5, marking the most significant update yet for one of its top-selling luxury SUVs. This new model features a design inspired by the Neue Klasse, a completely revamped interior, and the widest range of powertrains the X5 has ever offered. In addition to petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants, BMW has launched the fully electric iX5 and confirmed that a hydrogen-powered version of the X5 will be added to the lineup in the future.
Expanded powertrain options, enhanced technology, and a modern design
The updated X5 maintains its recognizable SUV shape while incorporating BMW’s latest design aesthetic. The front showcases a taller, more vertical illuminated kidney grille, accented by new “double-X” LED light signatures that merge the daytime running lights, turn signals, and low-beam headlights into a unified element. Standard features include adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beams, cornering lights, and Selective Beam technology.
The side profile appears sleeker than its predecessor, thanks to flush-fitting windows and new electrically-operated “BMW Winglet” door handles that blend into the B- and C-pillars. Prominent wheel arches, a bolder shoulder line, and alloy wheels that measure between 21 to 23 inches provide a more athletic stance. The rear features narrower LED tail lights and a redesigned bumper for a refreshed appearance. Customers can select from 11 exterior color options, with packages like M Sport, M Sport Pro, and the performance-oriented M60e xDrive still available.
BMW
The key highlight, however, is found under the hood. BMW has introduced five distinct engine options for the new X5 lineup, making this model the most flexible X5 to date. Buyers can choose from petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, the new battery-electric iX5, and a forthcoming hydrogen-powered variant. The electric iX5 utilizes BMW's sixth-generation EV technology with an 800V system, offering an estimated range of up to 435 miles (700 km) and charging speeds reaching 460kW.
Inside, BMW has reimagined the cabin featuring its latest Panoramic iDrive interface. A full-width Panoramic Vision display is positioned at the base of the windshield, paired with a substantial 17.9-inch central touchscreen and an optional 14.6-inch passenger display. The infotainment system operates on BMW Operating System X, and the interior has been enhanced with upgraded materials, ambient lighting, and AI-powered digital assistant features.
Production and availability
The fifth generation X5 holds significance for reflecting BMW’s strategy of allowing customers to choose their desired powertrain instead of mandating a shift to electric vehicles. Whether buyers prefer a traditional combustion engine, a plug-in hybrid, a completely electric SUV, or eventually hydrogen power, BMW aims to provide all these options under the same X5 nameplate.
Production for the new X5 is set to begin later this year, with global deliveries expected to roll out gradually from late 2026 into early 2027. The iX5 will spearhead BMW's next generation of premium electric vehicles, while the hydrogen-powered X5 is anticipated to follow the initial launch, further enhancing the company’s multi-powertrain approach.
