EXCLUSIVE: Michael Johnston, star of Obsession, shares his thoughts on the horror film's unprecedented success: 'It feels surreal.'

Actor Michael Johnston has gained widespread recognition as the star of the chilling summer hit, Obsession. Crafted by Curry Barker, who served as both writer and director, Obsession features Johnston in the role of Bear, a lonely young man who utilizes the One Wish Willow in an attempt to make his crush, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), love him above all others. However, he soon discovers that fulfilling his wish comes at a terrifying cost.

Currently, Obsession has surpassed $371 million in global box office earnings, according to Box Office Mojo, positioning it among the highest-grossing horror films in history. Following the film’s unexpected triumph, the main cast's careers have soared, with Johnston set to appear in season 2 of Marvel's popular series, X-Men ’97.

In a conversation with Digital Trends, Johnston shared his thoughts on the phenomenal success of Obsession at theaters, his interpretation of Bear, and his camaraderie with the cast after the film's release.

This transcript has been condensed for length and clarity.

Digital Trends: Michael, thank you for joining me today… I'm a huge admirer of the film, and it seems many others are as well. With its theatrical run nearing completion and its box office exceeding $300 million, it has even surpassed records previously held by The Exorcist and Sinners, which is astonishing. What are your thoughts on the film's popularity?

Johnston: It’s incredible…I went out to a diner yesterday to read scripts and nine people approached me, excited about the film. I keep hearing people say, "I’m not usually into horror movies, but I loved Obsession."

That’s an amazing compliment, and it really highlights the positive word of mouth surrounding this project. I feel so honored that something I contributed to is being appreciated and resonating with audiences. It’s a dream come true.

Digital Trends: In the film, your portrayal of Bear seems to be your breakout role, especially given the movie's success. How did it feel to take on such a character?

      Focus Features / Focus Features

Johnston: While making the film, I simply followed my process. Yes, I know this is what people will recognize me for, and that’s great.

However, I've been in this industry for a while, so I read the script numerous times, communicated with the director, asked questions, and then focused on the character’s motivations and daily life. I just become absorbed in it.

What I love about my work is that I'm telling a story and experiencing life through someone else's perspective. I’m a keen observer, curious about why people behave the way they do.

The script was fantastic, and Bear was somewhat of a blank canvas, allowing me to bring my ideas to the table. Curry and I were in sync, often bouncing ideas off each other, which made the process enjoyable.

It was incredibly creative and collaborative. While playing the role, I had no expectations. I never imagined the movie would become such a hit.

Yes, I worked hard, and I approach everything with that mindset, but it doesn’t feel real. I have no prior experience to compare it to. Maybe I’ll have a better perspective next time, but for now, it's just surreal and exciting.

Digital Trends: Many viewers have had strong reactions to the film, especially regarding your character and performance. Some online have labeled Bear as the true villain of the story due to his morally ambiguous actions. What do you think about this interpretation?

      Focus Features / Focus Features

Johnston: Absolutely, Bear is a villain. Ian is one too. Sure, Bear is the villain, but Ian played a role as well.

I find the discussions fascinating. I’ve overheard people debating Bear in public, which is so interesting. As long as people understand I’m not Bear and that I’m simply acting, which isn't always clear to everyone.

Digital Trends: Many have praised Inde Navarette’s performance, particularly with her character "Freaky Nikki." Were there moments during production when you felt genuinely frightened by her portrayal?

      Focus Features / Focus Features

Johnston: I wouldn’t say terrified, but I was certainly impressed. I was aware of the script’s content, but Curry and Inde would rehearse their scenes without me.

I didn’t witness those rehearsals, so seeing her deliver those performances for the first time was remarkable. Often, we went with the first take, and I found myself genuinely reacting to what she brought to the scene, thanks to the control she exhibits and the subtle choices she makes.

Her ability to convey different emotions was captivating. Even though Bear is the villain, she embodies the horror of the film, presenting a fresh perspective on this kind of storyline. To summarize, I was genuinely impressed with her work, and she was an exceptional scene partner.

Digital Trends: I also found her performance impressive. Despite the challenging dynamics between your characters, you’ve maintained friendships after filming. I saw the video of you
