Motorola's upcoming Edge phone might offer a more affordable alternative to Android's MagSafe than what Google has provided.
Motorola Edge 70 Max is expected to feature magnetic charging
Motorola may be incorporating Qi2 wireless charging technology, joining Google Pixel and Apple iPhone for magnetic charging capability. While the adoption of Qi2 for Android has been frustratingly slow, the upcoming Edge model could be the first non-flagship device to offer it.
A listing from the Wireless Power Consortium has identified the Motorola Edge 70 Max, and additional leaks have provided more information about its specifications and features. Some leaked promotional materials also showcase the magnetic Qi2 function in action.
This is the Qi2 device that Android should have had by now
Apple normalized MagSafe years ago. On the Android side, many devices still use "Qi2-ready" solutions where the magnets are included in cases rather than the phones themselves. Only the Pixel 10 series has incorporated built-in magnets. Now, the WPC certification indicates that the Motorola Edge 70 Max is set to offer 25W wireless charging, as well as compatibility with the expanding Qi2 accessory ecosystem.
For a premium mid-range phone, this could serve as a significant differentiator. While wireless charging is beneficial, magnetic wireless charging enhances usability by altering how users interact with accessories. Magnets improve alignment, which helps power banks adhere more effectively. Even desk stands grip the device better, and car mounts become a practical option. Other possibilities include camera grips and snap-on accessories.
What does the leak disclose?
The Motorola Edge 70 Max is likely to be positioned as a premium mid-range device, just below the flagship Motorola Signature and Motorola Razr Fold. As reported by Digital Citizen, it will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, a 50MP main camera with a Sony Lytia sensor, a rugged MIL-STD-810H-certified body, and color choices such as green, light blue, and black. Consequently, its price will likely be higher than the average Edge series device.
Motorola's second-generation Android tracker exceeds 500 days of battery life at a lower cost than AirTag
Motorola is launching the Moto Tag 2, its second-generation smart tracker for Android users. Competing with Apple's AirTag, the Moto Tag 2 will be available in North America starting June 30, featuring UWB (Ultra Wideband) tracking support, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and Google Find Hub support within a compact design suitable for keys, bags, luggage, camera equipment, and other easily misplaced items.
The standout feature is its battery life, as Motorola claims it boasts over 500 days of operation from a replaceable CR2032 battery.

Apple and Google discuss unlocking 50W wireless charging for smartphones
The next significant advancement in wireless charging may emerge not from a standout smartphone release but through collaborative discussions among major tech companies, according to a report by ITHome. Recently, Apple, Google, Xiaomi, and other leading tech firms convened in Beijing for the Wireless Power Consortium's (WPC) Qi Off-cycle Meeting, where they focused on the new Qi 50W wireless charging standard. The four-day event, hosted by Xiaomi, aimed to refine technical specifications, test prototype hardware, and ensure compatibility among devices from various brands.
