Will Apple’s iOS 27 introduce third-party AI options and assist Chinese iPhones in overcoming their AI challenges?

      Apple is reportedly set to enable users to select third-party AI models for the first time with its forthcoming iOS 27 release, enhancing the capabilities of Apple Intelligence to support fundamental system features such as Siri, writing tools, and image generation, as per Bloomberg's report.

      This change would represent a significant shift for Apple, moving away from its typically closed ecosystem towards a more open platform strategy. Additionally, it may provide a potential solution to the current limitations faced by iPhones in China, where AI functionalities have been hindered by regulatory and ecosystem challenges.

      Since the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024, iPhones sold in China have encountered considerable obstacles in accessing AI features. Regulatory stipulations have prevented these devices from utilizing the full array of native AI capabilities, including services like ChatGPT, forcing users to rely on the slower, conventional Siri or to download separate, large-model applications and navigate complex steps for AI tasks. This fragmented experience has hampered efficiency and placed iPhones in the China market at a disadvantage in the AI sector.

      However, the anticipated iOS 27 update could significantly alter this landscape. The new system is expected to introduce a feature called Extensions, a high-permission, flexible module enabling users to designate third-party AI applications as the default engine on their devices. This would allow users to directly access local AI models like DeepSeek and Doubao, providing a more intelligent and regionally adapted user experience.
