Gmail has finally enabled the option to change your outdated usernames.

      Google is finally addressing a long-standing request from Gmail users by allowing them to change their actual username in their Gmail addresses. This feature is no longer just in a testing phase, as Google has announced that it is now available for all Google Account users in the US. While it remains a limited release, it marks a broader rollout compared to previous announcements.

      Why this is significant

      For many, this change means the chance to move away from an email address that was acceptable in 2007 but seems outdated in 2026. Google recognizes this, which is why it framed the update as an opportunity for your account to "grow with you." This allows Gmail users to rectify one of the oldest missteps they made online without having to start fresh.

      What changes occur when you update your username

      If you have a Google Account ending in @gmail.com, you may now have the option to switch it to another @gmail.com address. Additionally, your previous Gmail address will become an alternative email, and you will continue to receive emails sent to both your old and new addresses. Your account data, including emails, photos, and other saved content, will remain unchanged. You can also log in with either address on Google services.

      There are some restrictions

      This isn't an unrestricted renaming option. Google has stated that you can change your Gmail username only once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes allowed in total, and the new address cannot be deleted afterward. Therefore, choosing the right name is still crucial. It's also important to note that your old address will not be available for use by anyone else, ensuring that no one can take your outdated handle after you've moved on.
