The upcoming feature could provide Apple with significantly richer data on fitness, recovery, and wellness throughout the day.

The Apple Watch is already adept at monitoring your heart during workouts, but Apple may be looking to expand this capability for all-day monitoring. As reported by Bloomberg's latest Power On newsletter, Apple is testing a feature that would allow the Watch to continuously gather heart rate data throughout the entire day.

Currently, the heart rate sensor operates continuously during workouts, but it only records readings at intervals outside of exercise based on your activity. The new method would essentially maintain workout-level heart rate monitoring around the clock. This could prove to be a more beneficial upgrade than it might initially appear.

Your Apple Watch could gain a deeper understanding of your daily activities

With ongoing monitoring, Apple would have a more comprehensive view of how your heart reacts throughout the day, even during activities that don’t qualify as formal workouts.

Factors such as a long walk, a physically intensive workday, or multiple short episodes of activity could all add to your cardiovascular workload. Competing products like Whoop already excel in this area by utilizing all-day heart rate data to assess the strain your body experiences.

This is one aspect where Apple has not kept pace with some competitors. A previous comparison between the Apple Watch Series 10 and the Pixel Watch 3 revealed that Google’s watch checks heart rate every second throughout the day, while Apple Watch readings outside of workouts are less frequent.

Apple may be targeting Whoop and Oura

More frequent heart rate data could provide Apple with the opportunity to improve metrics related to recovery, stress, and overall wellness. Bloomberg indicates that Apple is also working on updates to its fitness and health software to present wellness information in a manner similar to Whoop and Oura.

While it isn't confirmed that these two projects are directly related, they align quite well. Enhanced wellness insights require more robust underlying data, and continuous heart rate monitoring would supply Apple with significantly more information.

The feature is still undergoing testing, so there’s no assurance it will be available with the Series 12 or Ultra 4. Battery life might also become a concern, as continuous heart rate monitoring demands more power. Nevertheless, if Apple can implement it without draining battery life, it could greatly enhance the Watch's ability to analyze your body's activities outside of the gym.

A redesigned Apple Watch appears to be further away

Apple seems to be taking its time with the next major redesign of the Apple Watch. While this fall's Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to be relatively minor updates, Apple is reportedly working on a more significant redesign that may debut next year, although it could be postponed until 2028.

The latest information comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who states that Apple is continuing to develop a redesigned Apple Watch while also preparing smaller updates for this year. This means that those anticipating a dramatically different watch in the next iteration may be let down, although some intriguing changes are still on the horizon.

Google Health improves workout logging and tracking with the latest update

Issues with missing maps, workout totals, and Health Connect glitches have all been resolved in Google Health 5.07.

Google Health 5.07 is being released with several changes to how the app records and displays your workout and health data. Now, trail and incline runs will contribute to your Running Distance totals, and manually logged workouts can include additional information. Google has also addressed a problem that could have caused Health Connect to disconnect for some Android users.

The update is being rolled out on both Android and iOS starting today and should reach more devices in the upcoming week. It follows version 5.05, which added bidirectional syncing with Apple Health and Smart Health Links, and version 5.06, which allowed users to remove the lengthy guidance from the Health Coach on the Today tab.

Smart rings focus on heart health: A glimpse into a future where your finger becomes a lab for sweat sensing.

We have entered the era of biohacking. And no, this does not refer to extreme cases like Bryan Johnson, who is investing millions in ambitious health and anti-aging goals. The average audience for wearables is now seeking more from their devices. They are channeling the sensing data captured by smartwatches, bands, and rings into AI agents to derive deeper insights about their bodies. I created such a dashboard for myself using Claude in under ten minutes to make sense of the data collected by my smart ring.

However, there are limitations with these wearables. This stems from the restrictions of the underlying light-based sensors
