A revamped Apple Watch now appears to be further away.
Apple seems to be taking a measured approach with the upcoming major redesign of the Apple Watch. While the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, debuting this fall, are expected to be relatively minor updates, reports suggest that Apple is working on a more substantial overhaul that might be ready by next year, though it could be delayed until 2028.
The most recent information comes from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, indicating that Apple is continuing to develop a redesigned version of the Apple Watch while simultaneously preparing smaller enhancements for this year. This means that those hoping for a significantly different watch in the next generation may be let down, though there are still some intriguing changes on the way.
The Series 12 is anticipated to reintroduce ceramic cases, which Apple internally labels as “iceman.” Gurman mentions that Apple has tested both white and dark gray iterations of the ceramic models, along with a variety of new band colors and configurations.
While the Series 12 may seem familiar, Apple is testing more advanced health tracking features.
More noteworthy changes might occur underneath the exterior. One feature currently under evaluation could allow the Apple Watch's heart-rate sensor to continuously gather data throughout the day, rather than only during workouts, intense activity periods, or at specific times.
The concept is relatively straightforward: instead of the watch determining when heart-rate data is valuable to collect, it would continuously maintain the workout-style monitoring. This could provide Apple with a more comprehensive understanding of a user's cardiovascular activity throughout the day.
Apple is also reportedly revising its fitness and health software. The redesigned interface is set to highlight more wellness-related metrics, aligning Apple's approach more closely with products and services from Whoop and Oura, which focus on translating extensive health data into easy-to-understand daily insights.
This software update may ultimately have more significance than merely a new case design. Apple already gathers substantial health information from the Watch; making this information more accessible could enhance the device’s utility as a wellness companion.
The anticipated major redesign of the Apple Watch is still on the horizon.
While the Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to remain relatively minor updates, Gurman states that Apple aims to have its significant redesign ready for next year. However, if the company is not satisfied with the results, development could be postponed by another year.
This additional time allows Apple to reassess the watch rather than merely altering its appearance. Reports indicate that the company has explored various materials, case designs, and other methods to make the wearable feel considerably different from current models.
For consumers, this creates a tricky decision. If your current Apple Watch is aging, this year's models may still provide valuable enhancements, particularly in health and fitness. However, if you're specifically waiting for a major design shift, it might be wise to hold off a bit longer.
Apple's strategy appears increasingly focused on transforming the Watch into more than just a device that displays notifications and tracks workouts. The next major Apple Watch may be more characterized by its ability to continually understand you than by its visual design.
