Lucid is recalling 27,185 Air sedans due to a software issue with a fuse that failed to disconnect the power.

Lucid is recalling 27,185 Air sedans due to a software issue with the eFuse that protects their exterior lighting circuits, which may lead to overheating. Owners are advised to park away from buildings until their vehicles are updated, according to the filing. This recall follows records of three fire incidents and four instances of smoke, the first occurring in a Lucid-purchased vehicle in June 2023.

These cars lack a traditional fuse for the affected circuits. Instead, Lucid employs a software-controlled eFuse, which erroneously allowed a circuit to remain powered at excessive amperage levels. The circuits in question are standard components, including the front combination lamp and the center high-mounted stop lamp, which is situated in the rear window. These are not advanced technologies.

This marks Lucid's largest recall to date and the fourth for the Air model this year, as reported by InsideEVs. Last year, the company sold a total of 15,841 vehicles.

The filing offers more detail than just the overall figure, noting three fire incidents, four smoke occurrences, and 33 warranty claims related to damaged wiring in the stop lamp harness. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The earliest incident occurred three years ago, when a Lucid-owned 2023 Air caught fire at the front left corner in June 2023, alongside a customer's vehicle that burned in March 2025.

Lucid provided a remedy in July and submitted the recall notice on August 13. Just a week prior, CEO Silvio Napoli informed investors that the company had launched products that were not fully ready.

When the defect notification was issued, 20,719 of the vehicles had already received updates, indicating that three-quarters of the fleet was repaired before the recall announcement.

This proactive update approach is feasible because the fuse operates through software, which is the aspect that would be scrutinized by European regulatory authorities.

Since July 2024, updates to vehicles sold in the EU have been subject to regulation, accompanying a safety package that was introduced under the same reform. These rules apply to all newly registered vehicles and mandate a certified software update management system, as well as an assessment to determine if any updates affect the vehicle's approval status. Receiving a safety fix over the air is viewed as a documented occurrence rather than a background task.

This demonstrates the functional advantages of a recall with a straightforward solution. The fuse transformed into code, as did the fault, while the three years in between existed outside of the code.
