BMW has sold two million electric vehicles, with Europe accounting for seven out of ten of those sold in the last quarter.
BMW has reached a significant milestone by delivering its two millionth fully electric vehicle, an i5 M60 xDrive, which was manufactured in Dingolfing and given to a customer in Spain. In the second quarter, Europe accounted for 81,445 out of the 116,807 battery-electric cars sold by the company.
According to a statement from BMW, the i5 M60 xDrive represents their two millionth fully electric vehicle. The production of this vehicle took place in Dingolfing, Bavaria, and it has now been delivered to a customer in Spain.
The count for these vehicles dates back to 2013. When including plug-in hybrids, the total number of electrified vehicles delivered by the group is approximately 3.5 million.
The recent growth in sales has predominantly been in Europe. From the group's half-year figures, electrive noted that Europe accounted for 81,445 out of the 116,807 battery-electric cars sold in the second quarter, which translates to 70%. In contrast, the rest of the world, including China and the United States, combined for about 35,000 cars.
However, there is a downward trend overall. The group's deliveries of battery-electric vehicles declined by 7.4% in the first half of the year, totaling 204,295, with sales in China falling by more than 20%. At the same time, Chinese car manufacturers have captured a record share of the European market.
As such, this milestone reflects a reorganization rather than a surge in sales. BMW is not selling more electric vehicles than the previous year overall; rather, there is a notable increase in sales within a specific region.
The iX3 is primarily driving this success, with nearly 100,000 orders received since its launch. Currently, one in three electric BMWs ordered in Europe is an iX3, and roughly half of all X3 orders are for the electric variant.
European customers are also ahead of the overall group average regarding electric vehicle uptake. Battery-electric cars made up 28% of BMW’s sales in Europe during the first half, in a market still in the process of retrofitting curbside charging infrastructure.
Production of the next model has already commenced. The i3 is now in series production at the Munich plant, using the same Neue Klasse platform as the iX3.
BMW interprets these sales figures as validation of their strategy. Jochen Goller, the board member responsible for customer relations, brands, and sales, stated that selling two million battery-electric vehicles "highlights how BMW and MINI models are appealing to customers globally."
The term "globally" is significant. InsideEVs clearly pointed out that the iX3 is leading the charge, with the focus largely on the European market.
Consequently, BMW finds itself in a unique position: a German facility, a Spanish customer, and a European order book now support a product line that the company markets globally.
