BMW has sold a total of two million electric vehicles, with Europe purchasing seven out of ten of the cars sold in the last quarter.

BMW has reached a significant milestone by delivering its two millionth fully electric vehicle, an i5 M60 xDrive manufactured in Dingolfing and given to a customer in Spain. In the second quarter, Europe represented 81,445 of the 116,807 battery-electric cars sold by the company.

The company stated that the i5 M60 xDrive marks the two millionth fully electric car delivered. This count goes back to 2013, and when including plug-in hybrids, the total number of electrified vehicles delivered by BMW is around 3.5 million.

The recent increase in sales is primarily seen in Europe. According to calculations based on the group’s half-year figures, Europe accounted for 81,445 of BMW's 116,807 battery-electric vehicles sold in the second quarter, which is about 70%. The rest of the world, including China and the United States, contributed approximately 35,000 cars combined.

Overall, the trend appears to be declining. Deliveries of battery-electric vehicles dropped by 7.4% in the first half of the year to 204,295, while sales in China fell by over 20%. Meanwhile, Chinese automakers have gained a record share of the European market.

Thus, this milestone reflects a reallocation rather than an increase in overall sales. BMW is not delivering more electric vehicles compared to the previous year; instead, it is selling a greater number in a single region. The iX3 has been a significant contributor to this success, with nearly 100,000 orders received since its launch, accounting for one in three electric BMWs ordered in Europe. Approximately half of all X3 orders are now for the electric model.

European consumers are also ahead of the group average, with battery-electric cars making up 28% of BMW's sales in Europe during the first half of the year, all while the infrastructure for curbside charging is still being developed gradually.

Production of the next model is already underway, with series production of the i3 commencing in Munich in August, utilizing the same Neue Klasse platform as the iX3.

BMW interprets these figures as validation of its efforts. Jochen Goller, the board member responsible for customer relations, brands, and sales, noted that selling two million battery-electric cars "underscores how BMW and MINI models are winning over customers globally."

The emphasis on "globally" is noteworthy, as InsideEVs suggests that the success of the iX3 is primarily driven by the European market. This leaves BMW with a unique kind of reliance, as a German plant, a Spanish customer, and a European order book support a product line sold globally.
