Volkswagen introduces the ID. Era 5S priced at $13,400, featuring an electric range of 160 km.
Volkswagen has introduced a new sedan in China that might surprise some with its offerings and pricing. The ID. Era 5S begins at just 89,900 yuan, approximately $13,400, yet features a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of up to 160 km.
Officially launched at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, it is the second sedan in Volkswagen’s ID. Era series, which is exclusive to China. Developed through the SAIC-Volkswagen partnership, the 5S targets China's increasingly fierce market for affordable new-energy vehicles.
Volkswagen is aiming for China’s budget electric vehicle segment.
The price of the ID. Era 5S is arguably its most noteworthy aspect. At 89,900 yuan, the base model is priced similarly to various traditional sedans and domestic electric vehicles, such as the BYD Qin Plus and Geely Galaxy Starshine 6, according to CarNewsChina’s price comparisons.
Under the hood, it features a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine in conjunction with a 130 kW electric motor and a 19.1 kWh LFP battery sourced from Rept Battero Energy. Volkswagen claims it can achieve an electric range of up to 160 km according to China's CLTC testing standards. The sedan supports both AC and DC charging, with the latter allowing the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in about 15 minutes. It also includes vehicle-to-load functionality.

The ID. Era 5S spans 4,836 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,766 mm. Power is directed to the front wheels, while the suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear.
Volkswagen is also focusing significantly on technology within the vehicle. It boasts a 15.6-inch infotainment screen alongside an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, supporting Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and CarLink. Higher trim levels offer additional features such as heated and ventilated seats, a 16-speaker audio system, and navigation-assisted driving capabilities.
An affordable offering from Volkswagen that has much at stake
The ID. Era 5S is important as Volkswagen faces increasing challenges in the Chinese market. Domestic brands have excelled in producing feature-rich electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids at prices that foreign manufacturers often find difficult to compete with.
When compared to vehicles sold in the U.S., the ID. Era 5S appears even more impressive. At around $13,400, Volkswagen's new plug-in hybrid is roughly half the cost of many of the most affordable sedans in America, including the Kia K4, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen’s own Jetta. The price disparity widens in the case of electrified vehicles, with the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt starting at $28,995 and the 2026 Nissan Leaf at $29,990, both exceeding the cost of the ID. Era 5S by more than two times. Other plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid also begin at over $30,000. Although this comparison isn’t perfect due to variances in regulations, taxes, production costs, and market conditions, it highlights the significant downward pressure that China’s automotive market has exerted on the prices of electric vehicles.
With a starting price of around $13,400, Volkswagen has a much stronger response to this competitive landscape. Additionally, the car is not purely an electric vehicle, which may appeal to consumers wanting electric driving capabilities for short trips without the concern of charging infrastructure on longer journeys.

There are five variants of the new model, with pricing at 119,900 yuan ($17,680), 129,900 yuan, 139,900 yuan, 144,900 yuan, and 149,900 yuan. SAIC Volkswagen is currently providing limited-time incentives on the new model, with prices starting at 89,900 yuan ($13,260), along with options priced at 99,900 yuan, 109,900 yuan, 114,900 yuan, and 119,900 yuan.
Incentives include a discount of 30,000 yuan off the official pricing and offers such as a 1,000-yuan deposit that can be transformed into a 5,000 yuan discount on the final payment, along with trade-in subsidies.
Notably, pre-sales for the ID. ERA 5S commenced on August 11, with an initial pre-sale price of 115,900 yuan. Volkswagen has yet to announce intentions to sell the ID. Era 5S outside of China. For the time being, its significance lies in representing a major global automaker striving to compete directly with China’s dynamic
