China is recalling millions of electric vehicles due to the emergency release blending into the trim.

China’s market regulator has mandated the recall of over 4 million vehicles, including nearly 2.98 million Teslas, due to issues with interior emergency door releases that blend into the surrounding trim. The solutions involve adding warning labels and issuing software updates ahead of a 2027 standard prohibiting concealed handles.

China has pulled back more than four million cars because a lever is not easily visible. The market regulator determined that the interior emergency door releases blend into the trim, making them difficult to locate when needed most.

Tesla represents the majority of the recalls. Nearly 2.98 million imported and locally manufactured Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles are affected, with the recall commencing on September 25.

Domestic manufacturers are included in the same report. Xiaomi is recalling 390,435 SU7 cars, Leapmotor 371,200 vehicles, Xpeng 264,842, and Zeekr 92,658, alongside Chery, Dongfeng, Arcfox, and FAW.

The issue is with the visibility, not the functionality. The releases are operable, but if an accident damages the low-voltage system, occupants and rescuers must find a handle designed to be discreet.

The proposed fixes are limited. Most manufacturers will add warning labels, and several will implement software updates that adjust the door unlocking logic and automatically lower the windows following an impact.

A sticker does not constitute a redesign, and all parties are aware of this fact. The recall serves as a temporary measure until the regulation that will actually modify the hardware takes effect.

From 2027, China will largely prohibit concealed and retractable door handles. Vehicles will need mechanical unlock mechanisms that function even if the electrical system fails.

Europe is addressing the same issue without legislation. The Euro NCAP’s 2026 protocol mandates that electrically powered exterior handles must remain functional post-impact and grants credit for physical buttons versus controls that rely solely on touchscreens.

The distinction lies in the consequences of non-compliance. Failing to meet Euro NCAP standards results in lost consumer test stars for manufacturers, while a violation of a Chinese national standard could cost them the ability to sell the vehicle.

The United States is lagging behind both. Bloomberg has associated at least 15 deaths with Tesla's door handles malfunctioning in emergencies, yet the NHTSA is still deliberating on whether regulations are necessary in a market where recalls typically address one defect at a time.

The Chinese response was prompted by a specific incident. In 2025, three students tragically died in a Xiaomi SU7 after it collided with a barrier and caught fire, with witnesses reporting that the retracted handles prevented them from opening the doors.
