Hyundai's premium brand has introduced a new flagship electric vehicle, but there are no plans for its release in Europe.

Genesis has introduced the GV90, a full-size electric SUV featuring 490 kW, a 123.5 kWh battery, and pillarless coach doors on the Neolun version. It is set to go on sale in the United States early next year, although the announcement does not mention Europe.

The GV90 is the largest and most expensive vehicle Genesis has created. It boasts 490 kilowatts, 800 Newton metres, and a 123.5 kWh battery, which was presented in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The engineering is quite impressive. Genesis claims around 500 km of range based on its own testing, a 10 to 80% charging time of 22 minutes using a 350 kW charger, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering.

The standout feature is the doors. The Neolun version includes coach doors without a B-pillar, which required the development of a new body structure to ensure crash performance remains effective.

The details regarding its market availability are particularly revealing. The GV90 will be manufactured at a new facility in Ulsan and will arrive in American dealerships early next year, expanding the brand’s US lineup to seven vehicles.

There is no mention of Europe in the announcement at all. Genesis's press materials discuss the platform, wooden flooring, and executive seating, but do not indicate whether the flagship will be available in Europe.

The sales figures clarify the absence of a European focus. Last year, Genesis sold 82,331 vehicles in the United States compared to just 2,476 in Europe, with the latter experiencing a 6.7% decline as Chinese brands captured a record portion of the market.

Analysts have not been favorable regarding the European initiative. One suggested to Forbes that the brand "might as well pack up and leave now," while another recommended that Genesis should focus solely on the US market.

Meanwhile, the company has been quietly restructuring its European strategy. It is transitioning from its dealership-free concierge model to shared showrooms with Hyundai and Kia, and it is introducing hybrids and range extenders after originally planning to sell only electric vehicles.

The segment that the GV90 would enter in Europe is highly competitive. It would compete with the Mercedes EQS SUV and a refreshed BMW i7 within a luxury market where German residual values dominate.

The situation in the US is complicated as well. EV sales have slowed following the expiration of the $7,500 federal credit, and Genesis has not confirmed whether the GV90 will also be available as a hybrid or gasoline model.

Thus, the flagship illustrates what the brand is capable of producing, while the sales data indicates where it can effectively market its vehicles. These are two distinct scenarios, and currently, only one of them includes Europe.
