Hyundai's luxury division has introduced a new flagship electric vehicle, but there are no plans for it to be available in Europe.

Genesis has introduced the GV90, a full-size electric SUV featuring 490 kW, a 123.5 kWh battery, and pillarless coach doors on the Neolun variant. It will be available for purchase in the United States early next year, with no mention of a European release in the announcement.

Genesis has unveiled its largest and priciest vehicle to date, the GV90, an electric SUV boasting 490 kilowatts, 800 Newton metres of torque, and a 123.5 kWh battery, which was showcased in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The engineering behind this vehicle is impressive, with Genesis claiming a range of approximately 500 km based on its own testing. It can achieve a 10 to 80% charge in just 22 minutes using a 350 kW charger, along with features like air suspension and rear-wheel steering.

A standout feature of the GV90 is its doors. The Neolun variant includes coach doors and lacks a B-pillar, a design choice that the company states required a new body structure to maintain crash performance.

The details regarding its availability are telling. The GV90 will be manufactured at a new facility in Ulsan and will make its way to American showrooms early next year, expanding the brand’s lineup in the U.S. to seven models.

However, Europe is not mentioned in the announcement at all. The press materials from Genesis detail the vehicle's platform, wooden floor, and executive seating but do not indicate whether the flagship model will be sold in Europe.

The sales figures clarify the omission. Last year, Genesis sold 82,331 vehicles in the United States compared to just 2,476 in Europe, where sales dropped by 6.7% as Chinese brands captured a record market share.

Analysts have been critical of the brand’s operations in Europe. One remarked to Forbes that the company “may as well pack up and go now,” while another suggested that Genesis should focus solely on the U.S. market.

In response, the company has been discreetly reworking its approach in Europe. It is transitioning from a dealership-free concierge model to shared showrooms with Hyundai and Kia, and is introducing hybrids and range extenders after initially planning to sell only electric vehicles.

The segment into which the GV90 will enter is highly competitive. It will compete against the Mercedes EQS SUV and a refreshed BMW i7 in a luxury market where German brands dominate in terms of residual values.

The situation in the U.S. market is complex as well. Electric vehicle sales have decelerated since the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, and Genesis did not confirm whether the GV90 will be offered as a hybrid or gasoline variant.

Thus, while the flagship indicates the brand’s capabilities, the sales data highlight its target markets. These are two distinct scenarios, and as of now, only one includes Europe.
