Google is providing students with a complimentary year of AI Pro and has launched a new Gemini Student Hub.
Gemini is receiving additional tools to aid students in studying, organizing, and conducting research.
Google currently ranks behind OpenAI and Anthropic in the frontier-model race. Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol outperform Gemini 3.1 Pro on key independent benchmarks, while Google’s anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro is still in testing after reportedly not meeting internal performance expectations.
As Google aims to bridge this gap, it is also actively tailoring Gemini toward a distinct audience. Eligible college students in the U.S. can now access Google AI Pro for free for an entire year, along with a newly established Student Hub focused on studying, coursework, and research.
Benefits for students
College students in the U.S. who qualify can acquire 12 months of Google AI Pro without paying the standard monthly fee of $19.99. This entitles them to increased usage limits for Gemini, access to Gemini Spark, integration of Gemini within Gmail and Docs, and 5TB of storage. Students located outside the U.S. receive a slightly varied offer: eligible individuals can access one year of Google AI Plus, which includes higher Gemini limits, entry to Gemini Omni, and 400GB of storage.
In addition, Google is launching a new Student Hub within Gemini. Rather than having its expanding suite of educational tools dispersed throughout the app, this hub provides students with a single location to initiate Study Notebooks, create flashcards, and take practice quizzes.
Capabilities of the Student Hub
The addition of Study Notebooks is likely the most beneficial aspect of this update. Students can upload lecture notes and other course materials, allowing Gemini to create a study plan around them. They can also take a diagnostic quiz to identify which subjects they find challenging, followed by shorter lessons and quizzes aimed at addressing those weaknesses.
There are more useful features on the horizon. Gemini will soon be able to extract exam dates and assignment deadlines from syllabi and integrate them into Google Calendar, pending user consent. Furthermore, Study Notebooks will include graphs and images, and Gemini will generate interactive tables, grids, and 3D visualizations for topics that lend themselves to visual representation.
Gemini Live will also receive a study-centered enhancement. Deep Research can now be initiated through a voice conversation, can run in the background, and can be discussed once the report is complete. Users will also be able to switch between speaking and typing without losing the context of their research.
Overall, Google is providing students many incentives to utilize Gemini throughout the upcoming academic year.
