Muon Space secures $250 million in funding from investors such as Google and Salesforce.

Muon Space has secured $250 million in a funding round supported by Google and Salesforce, as per their announcement. This is the largest investment made to a company primarily known for its constellation focused on wildfire monitoring.

The increase in funding had been anticipated for some time. Axios reported in June that the California-based company was in the process of raising $250 million in a round led by Eclipse, indicating about two months elapsed between the initial report and the closure of the funding.

Google’s involvement is the least unexpected aspect. Muon develops and operates FireSat, the wildfire detection constellation created in collaboration with the Earth Fire Alliance and Google Research, and it launched the first three functional satellites in this system in July.

FireSat aims to detect fires while they are still small, comparable to the size of a classroom rather than a neighborhood, and it revisits specific areas frequently enough to provide useful detection for responders heading to the scene.

This challenge is similar to what OroraTech is tackling from Munich with a smaller constellation. The engineering difficulty is often underestimated, necessitating a constellation of dozens of satellites rather than just a few.

However, what Muon actually offers is the manufacturing process. The company creates mission-specific constellations on a platform it calls Halo, and CEO Jonny Dyer has articulated the ambition as "the world’s first automated, high-mix, high-volume constellation manufacturing system," essentially aiming to produce satellites in the same manner as automotive manufacturing.

Muon’s target is to produce 500 spacecraft annually from a 130,000-square-foot facility in San Jose. To facilitate in-house propulsion, it acquired Starlight Engines, a manufacturer of zinc-fueled Hall-effect thrusters, last year.

The company's focus has also shifted. Originally starting as a climate and Earth observation enterprise, Muon has gradually leaned towards defense applications, which have attracted funding in the small satellite sector since 2024, and is developing the Víndler radio-frequency sensing constellation for Sierra Space.

Prior to this funding round, Muon had raised $146 million in a Series B round, which was closed in stages between August 2024 and June 2025, with the final tranche led by Congruent Ventures, joined by Activate Capital, Acme Capital, Costanoa Ventures, Radical Ventures, and ArcTern Ventures. A portion of that funding came from a credit facility rather than equity.

Neither Muon nor its investors have disclosed the specifics of the new round. The valuation remains undisclosed, the ratio of equity to debt is unclear, and the contributions from Google and Salesforce, along with the associated vehicles, have not been revealed.

The sector surrounding Muon has had a strong year. Planet Labs achieved its first profitable year, bolstered by a $900 million backlog and defense contracts, while European counterparts have been consistently raising funds against similar demand trends.

However, the demand aspect of the story remains challenging. Satellite manufacturing has become significantly cheaper and quicker, yet the market for their observations has not grown at a comparable pace, explaining why many Earth observation firms end up servicing defense ministries.

Wildfire detection represents one of the few applications with a clear buyer and a defined urgency. The Earth Fire Alliance, a non-profit organization, intends to expand the constellation over the coming years, and Muon has been contracted to expedite this process.

Salesforce stands out as the most intriguing entity among the investors. It does not have a clear operational need for satellite imagery, indicating that the investment may align more with its venture branch and sustainability focus rather than any direct product integration.

Such corporate investments have shown an unusual willingness to fund Earth observation initiatives over the past two years, partly due to the sector's emergence of revenue and the justifiability of climate-related investments when the constellation also serves fire detection purposes.

In 2024 alone, Muon signed over $100 million in new contracts and expanded its workforce by 50% within six months up to mid-2025. This data has not been publicly updated since.
