Horizon Hunters Gathering's live-service goals are reportedly being abandoned.
Guerrilla Games
If you were eager to team up with friends in Cauldron Descent soon, you may need to hold off. A recent Bloomberg report indicates that PlayStation has instructed a significant revamp of Horizon Hunters Gathering, the multiplayer spin-off announced by Guerrilla Games in February. This reboot follows the game’s challenges during closed playtests, leaving executives doubtful about its current trajectory.
The live-service model is being discarded.
Sony
Guerrilla has reportedly been revising the game since June, aiming to eliminate its live-service framework completely. Instead of providing an ongoing, updated multiplayer format, the game is set to become a smaller, more conventional cooperative experience centered on a robust story mode.
This represents a substantial departure from the vision originally articulated by director Arjan Bak, which included tactical co-op hunts with three players against enormous machines, a roguelite perk system for character customization, and a persistent social hub for preparation between missions. It remains uncertain how much of the initial concept will endure through the overhaul.
The game is not canceled, but there is significant pressure. Team members are said to have until December to demonstrate the new direction to executives, and many are already being reassigned to another Guerrilla project that is also undergoing its own year-end review.
A recurring trend for PlayStation
PlayStation’s aspirations for live-service games continue to falter, with Horizon being the latest casualty. The company promised in 2022 to launch ten live-service titles, but its progress has been rocky since then.
Sony Interactive Entertainment
The problematic launch of Concord in 2024, which was removed from sale just two weeks after its debut, stands out as a notable error, alongside the cancellation of live-service projects at Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, the latter of which was shut down entirely this year.
Helldivers 2 emerges as a genuine success story, and Bungie’s Marathon remains active despite facing its own challenges. In a June interview, Sony Interactive CEO Hideaki Nishino expressed that the company still plans to support live-service games moving forward. The sustainability of Sony's optimism will likely hinge on Guerrilla's ability to successfully execute Horizon Hunters Gathering's reboot.

PlayStation has finally developed gaming speakers that offer more than just game audio.
Sony introduced its first PlayStation wireless speakers nearly a year ago during the Wolverine release date announcement, and we now know when gamers can expect them at their desks. The Pulse Elevate wireless speakers will be available starting November 12, with preorders beginning September 1 at 10 AM local time, or 10 AM ET in the US. Midnight Black will be available globally via PlayStation Direct and select retailers, while the White edition will have limited availability. With a price tag of $219.99, the company is bringing a considerable amount of technology from its Pulse gaming headset line into users' desk setups.

Footage of Grand Theft Auto VI has surfaced online just under two weeks before Rockstar Games is expected to unveil more about the highly anticipated title, showing small but potentially impactful gameplay changes. Two clips, each just over a minute long, reportedly feature the main character Jason shooting hoops and driving a modified Vapid Ganado pickup truck. The clips seem to originate from an unfinished version of the game, with the original posts swiftly taken down following copyright claims. The leaked videos also allegedly included cryptocurrency advertisements and QR codes, complicating verification of their authenticity. Initially shared on Reddit, the footage was rapidly removed by Reddit's legal team.
Beyond GTA VI: Why 2026 might be the best year for gaming yet.
GTA VI has dominated the conversation, but it may not deserve all the attention.
There's no doubt that Grand Theft Auto VI will be the standout game of 2026, possibly even the biggest entertainment release of the year. With Rockstar finally releasing it on November 19, the gaming community has eagerly awaited the return to Vice City, and I share that excitement. However, as I reflect on the games I’ve played this year and those still to be released, I believe we're perceiving 2026 in a misleading way. It’s not just GTA VI that makes this year significant; it's everything surrounding it.
