      Horizon Hunters Gathering's intentions for a live-service model are reportedly being abandoned.

      If you were anticipating teaming up with friends in Cauldron Descent soon, it might be best to hold off. A recent Bloomberg report indicates that PlayStation has instructed Guerrilla Games to undergo a significant overhaul of Horizon Hunters Gathering, the multiplayer spin-off that was revealed in February. The reboot comes after the game faced challenges during closed playtests, leaving executives skeptical about the current direction.

      The live-service aspect is being discarded.

      Guerrilla has reportedly been revising the game since June, aiming to completely eliminate its live-service foundation. Rather than providing a continuously updated multiplayer experience, the game will be transformed into a smaller, traditional cooperative title featuring a structured story mode.

      This marks a significant change from director Arjan Bak's initial vision, which included tactical three-player co-op hunts against massive machines, a roguelite perk system for customizing character builds, and a persistent social hub for preparation between missions. It remains uncertain how much of the original concept will survive the overhaul.

      The game is not being canceled, but pressure is mounting. Reports suggest that the team has until December to validate the new direction to executives, and several current members are already being reassigned to a different Guerrilla project that is also facing a year-end evaluation.

      A recurring trend for PlayStation.

      PlayStation's attempts at a live-service model have repeatedly faltered, with Horizon being the latest loss. The company had committed in 2022 to releasing ten live-service titles, but its performance has been far from stellar since then.

      The ill-fated launch of Concord in 2024, which was taken off the market just two weeks after release, remains a notable blunder, and Sony has also discontinued live-service projects at Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, which was entirely closed this year.

      On a positive note, Helldivers 2 has emerged as a notable success, and Bungie’s Marathon is still active despite its own challenges. Sony Interactive CEO Hideaki Nishino mentioned in a June interview that the company plans to continue supporting live-service games in the future. The sustainability of Sony’s optimism will likely hinge on Guerrilla's ability to successfully execute the reboot of Horizon Hunters Gathering.
