Space has secured $2.4 million in funding to eliminate the traditional hard drive by creating an AI-native filesystem designed for both humans and agents.
Every few years, a promise emerges to eliminate the hard drive. The most recent is Space, a San Francisco startup recently disclosing $2.4 million in pre-seed funding, with a straightforward proposition: a distributed filesystem that enables both people and AI agents to operate across petabytes of live data while utilizing, as the company asserts, zero local disk space.
The funding round was spearheaded by a16z’s Speedrun accelerator, along with contributions from Golden Ventures, Northside Ventures, and a number of angel investors from firms such as Parsec, Sentry, Superwhisper, and Modem.
The concept aims to merge the cloud and local drive into a singular shared layer that operates just above the operating system. Files show up in the Finder and open within the native applications already in use, yet nothing is completely downloaded; when an application or agent requests data, Space claims to stream only the specific byte ranges necessary to complete the task.
In theory, a video editor could initiate a project that surpasses the capacity of their laptop, and an agent could navigate an organization’s entire files by accessing only the fragments pertinent to its role.
The founders are placing their bet on this last point. Currently, most agent-based tools require users to upload entire files to a chatbot, even when only a single page or frame is needed, which is slow and inefficient. This mirrors the trend of creating native primitives for agents as a niche industry.
“Humans and agents are engaged with more data than any local disk can accommodate,” stated co-founder Jason Zhao. “They should not have to wait for files to be copied or ingested before getting started.”
This development arrives amid a broader push to establish the infrastructure supporting the AI boom, ranging from VAST Data’s multibillion-dollar storage enterprise to a wave of startups providing the less glamorous data layers essential for agent functionality.
Space argues that the conventional filesystem, the oldest abstraction in computing, is the ideal access layer because it is already universally understood by every app, device, person, and agent.
However, a cloud drive that only streams necessary data while functioning like a local disk is not without its challenges. Tools like LucidLink have already given creative teams immediate access to vast media projects for years, and services such as Dropbox, Box, and Google Drive have integrated selective sync capabilities.
Space posits that these tools were designed for humans syncing files one device at a time, whereas the upcoming demand surge is expected to come from agents traversing files at machine speed, suggesting that a filesystem redesigned for both humans and agents is superior to a sync tool enhanced with AI.
Currently, Space is in private beta with around 100 users and teams, claiming an organic audience exceeding 80,000 across various platforms, which the founders attribute to a previous venture where transferring terabytes of video monthly became a significant organizational bottleneck.
“Space is challenging one of the oldest beliefs in computing: that a file must be present on your device before you engage with it,” noted Jonathan Lai, a general partner at a16z, framing the product as a single solution that caters to both human creators and AI agents simultaneously, a focus that is evident in the firm's broader investment in agent infrastructure.
The founders’ vision extends even further: a “Space Computer” where the physical machine effectively serves as a portal to virtually limitless storage and computing power.
Whether a small team can achieve something akin to infinite computing with a budget of $2.4 million remains an open question, and the history of "the disk is dead" claims is well established.
Nonetheless, the underlying observation is valid: AI agents have quietly shifted the bottleneck from storage to data access, making the filesystem a strategic battleground. Space has identified a genuinely significant challenge. The more difficult task, as always, lies in constructing the mundane, dependable infrastructure that allows petabytes to feel local.
