      Whether it's through tap-to-pay, card swiping, or chip insertion, card-based payment methods have become essential for everyday purchases. For many years, it seemed that these payment methods, which have largely supplanted cash, could not evolve further; from a casual observer's perspective, what could be more convenient than tapping a card to pay for groceries or gas?

      Mobile wallets signify a significant advancement in this area, enhancing the interaction by maintaining the physical action while transforming the item through digital technology. Nowadays, individuals can store various debit, credit, and even gift cards on devices like smartphones or smartwatches, making them accessible without carrying the physical cards.

      While mobile wallets have not rendered traditional cards obsolete, they are an important addition to the suite of payment options available, which may both complicate and improve certain aspects of the existing payment experience.

      The Emergence of Mobile NFC Interfaces

      Mobile NFC, or near-field communication, is the technology that enables phones and wearables to interact with other NFC-equipped devices. It functions as a direct enhancement to radio-frequency identification (RFID), which is commonly used for items such as security cards and key fobs.

      NFC is crucial for the functionality of mobile wallets, allowing specific devices to communicate payment information over short distances. This is partly because, unlike Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, NFC doesn't require users to engage in manual pairing or device discovery; users only need to bring an NFC-enabled device close to another for them to connect wirelessly, resulting in a smooth user experience.

      In addition to convenience, NFC is noteworthy for its security and privacy. This technology allows users to avoid carrying physical cards, thus diminishing the chances of loss or theft, and it can also integrate security features like passwords and biometric scans. Mobile wallets typically implement additional security measures, such as data encryption, to lower the risk of digital theft.

      Experimenting with NFC: EmberPay’s Case Study

      As time has progressed, companies have been increasingly innovative with mobile NFC interfaces, expanding the technology's applications beyond direct payment options like mobile wallets. For instance, similar to RFID, NFC is being utilized for security purposes, allowing users to store digital keys on their devices, thus minimizing the need to manage physical copies.

      Additionally, some organizations, such as EmberPay—founded by Josh Steiner, Charlie Baker, and Micah Thomas—are exploring the use of chats as a payment method instead of traditional debit or credit cards, especially for splitting costs among multiple people. Although various split-payment tools exist, most function more as reimbursement methods rather than in-store payment solutions. Essentially, they require one person to pay upfront and then facilitate repayment from friends later.

      According to the company, EmberPay distinguishes itself by allowing all group members to pay simultaneously at the register, a method aimed at saving time and simplifying the process of splitting what could be seen as minor payments.

      Steiner explains the fundamental concept succinctly: "We’ve abstracted the payment instrument and elevated chats to be the selectable object at the point of sale. Basically, we’ve enabled people to pay for things with chats rather than a debit or credit card."

      In initial tests, the company had 50 college students in active coffee shops and restaurants complete split transactions using both a popular payment app and EmberPay in real payment situations.

      The familiar sequence with the popular payment app involved one person making the payment, calculating what each person owed, opening a messaging app, sending a request, and waiting for the others to open the app and finalize the payment, which averaged 30 seconds. In contrast, the same outcome with EmberPay took only 3 seconds. A critical question arose separately: at what point does a transaction feel too trivial to split?

      Before the pilot, Thomas surveyed about 500 college students to gauge preferences, and his findings influenced the team’s view of the product's competition. “We discovered that many people did not ask for reimbursement primarily due to shyness or discomfort in requesting money from friends,” he shares. “On average, individuals were willing to request $12; amounts below that would lead them to prefer taking the loss rather than asking for repayment.”

      EmberPay’s chat interface aims to alleviate the financial anxiety encountered in testing an earlier design. The initial product issued shared cards among groups of friends, but user feedback indicated that the perceived risk associated with a joint financial tool created psychological barriers that could not be mitigated through explanations.

      By replacing the card with a chat thread, a medium users are already comfortable with for communication, EmberPay seeks to address the issue not by minimizing risk but by eliminating the trigger for it.

      In the initial tests with the popular payment app, participants set a minimal threshold of $24 before they would even consider splitting a payment. Conversely, that threshold dropped to $4 with EmberPay, indicating users were open to splitting costs for a single item—something the popular payment app flow rendered economically illogical.
