HSBC Asset Management has made an investment in Model ML's 'agentic operating system' designed for banks.
HSBC Asset Management has acquired a stake in Model ML, a London-based startup creating what it describes as an agentic operating system for the financial services sector. This deal reflects industry sentiments regarding the future value of enterprise AI rather than focusing solely on any one company.
The investment was made through HSBC AM's primary venture-capital strategy, though neither party disclosed the financial details. Model ML posits that the model itself is no longer the primary concern. Instead of locking firms into a single provider, its platform directs tasks to the most suitable AI model, enabling clients to adapt to advancements in the ecosystem without needing to retrain staff or overhaul existing workflows.
This approach aligns with other efforts to establish the operating system that Wall Street has lacked and assumes that success will be measured in software innovation rather than model performance. In practice, this means automating tedious tasks. The platform manages complex workflows across research, due diligence, financial analysis, and the creation of client-ready documents, while ensuring that governance, accuracy, and consistency—critical for compliance officers—are prioritized over mere intelligence.
Even though Model ML launched less than two years ago, it has already partnered with many of the world's top banks, asset managers, and advisory firms, raising over $100 million, including a $75 million Series A round touted as one of the largest in fintech's history. This rapid progress in an industry known for its slow pace adds to its intrigue.
The identity of the investor is as important as the financial backing. HSBC AM’s leading venture strategy is a curated fund-of-funds initiative within the firm’s $81 billion alternatives platform, which includes selective co-investments in high-growth, venture-backed firms alongside its commitments to various funds. An endorsement from a global bank serves as a valuable signal for a startup targeting banks as its primary market.
Chaz Englander, co-founder and CEO of Model ML, framed the partnership as an endorsement of specialized, vertical AI. He stated, “Instead of a single model, the differentiator is increasingly the software that can integrate multiple models across complex financial workflows,” suggesting that HSBC AM’s support demonstrates increasing belief in AI specifically tailored for finance. “That’s exactly what we’re building.”
Patrick Sixsmith, head of venture capital at HSBC Asset Management, offered a more cautious perspective. He noted that the investment demonstrates a commitment to “supporting companies at the cutting edge” of AI and next-generation software that is “fuelling a new wave of innovation throughout the economy.”
The timing is intentional, as the focus within enterprises is shifting from individual models to the systems necessary for implementation. Investment is flowing to those developing the foundational infrastructure, ranging from startups deploying AI agents to specialists integrating agentic banking methods, and financial services—backed by substantial budgets and regulations—present one of the most appealing markets for such innovations.
A governance-first approach resonates well from London, where banks, being some of the most heavily regulated entities globally, regard auditability and consistency as essential rather than optional. This positions a European startup favorably, as American labs pursue broader scale. However, whether these banks will act swiftly remains an open question.
While the investment amount has not been disclosed and claims of model-agnostic routing are common among competitors, incumbents from major consulting firms to internal engineering teams are targeting the same workflows. The true challenge lies not in adding another well-known name to the cap table but in determining whether Model ML’s agentic operating system can withstand interaction with compliance departments and translate successful pilots into ongoing, sustainable spending.
