Lenovo seems to still be exploring how much screen space it can fit into a laptop bag. A recent report from WindowsLatest highlights a design for the Lenovo ThinkBook with a display that can expand horizontally, potentially offering users significantly more desktop space without making the laptop excessively large.
The design appears to be linked to a Lenovo patent concerning a laptop computer depicted in various configurations. This patent was filed in August 2024 and granted in the US on March 10, 2026, with Lenovo Beijing listed as the holder.
This filing shows the device in alternate usage setups, implying a chassis intended to change shape instead of sticking to one fixed screen size. There is still much we don’t know, such as official details regarding its panel specifications, pricing, or hardware features.

Lenovo has already demonstrated that this concept can be successful.
A horizontally expanding ThinkBook would be a logical progression for a company that has spent recent years redefining laptop screens. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable transitioned from an experimental concept to a product. Its 14-inch OLED screen can mechanically extend to 16.7 inches, increasing the display area by about 50% for web pages, spreadsheets, coding, and stacked windows.

Lenovo's documentation confirms that users can extend the screen using a keyboard shortcut or an upward hand gesture. Expanding horizontally would address another issue. Increased width could accommodate two or three windows side by side, provide longer video-editing timelines, or create an ultrawide workspace without needing to carry a portable monitor.
Lenovo has already created the more ambitious version.

At CES 2026, Lenovo showcased the Legion Pro Rollable, whose 16-inch OLED expands physically to 21.5 inches and eventually to 24 inches. Lenovo presents it as a proof of concept, with the added width primarily aimed at ultrawide gaming experiences.
The prototype still requires refinement. Lenovo has engineering tasks remaining before a horizontal rollable can become a standard production laptop. A ThinkBook version could give this technology a much “broader” application. Lenovo already markets a vertically expanding productivity laptop and has shown a horizontally expanding gaming model. Transforming the latter concept into a productivity-driven ThinkBook doesn’t seem far-fetched.
